My Journey to Field Hockey
I’ve been an athlete my whole life and have always enjoyed pushing myself to reach new personal goals. When I dedicate myself to a sport, I’m not able to do it half-heartedly. It all started soon after I turned 2, when my mom took me to a roller rink for the first time to try something new. At 4, I began competing in local and regional competitions. A few years later, I won the silver medal in Figures at Nationals in the 8 and under category. I was independent and trained well by myself, but soon discovered my first team sport: softball.
I started in a rec league (as pitcher and shortstop) and was soon recruited by a travel team, where I excelled in the shortstop position. Helping my 14U team win state and regional competitions was rewarding, and I was proud to make the Varsity team my freshman year in high school. However, the summer before I entered high school, I discovered a new passion: field hockey!
Not knowing anything about the sport, I joined a local rec league to learn the basics and see if it was a sport that I wanted to pursue. It was an easy decision! It combined the best two aspects of sports: speed and teamwork. I joined the JV team my freshman year and Varsity my sophomore year. That year, my Varsity team won the state title for our school for the first time in the school’s history, and words can’t describe how I felt when I scored the winning goal.
Since then, I’ve participated in some college clinics and Futures, and also traveled to Amsterdam to participate in World Camp. I am a member of the Gaels travel team in JPOL and JPIL. To stay in shape, I am also on the Varsity indoor and outdoor track and field teams, competing in the 800M, 4x200M, 4x400M, 4x800M, and pole vault.
I didn’t discover field hockey until the end of 8th grade, but it quickly became my passion. I’m always learning something new from my teammates and coaches. As far as I’ve come in the past three years, I’m excited to see what my full potential will be in this sport!
