I am Emma Zhang in the high school class of 2025 in St. Louis, Missouri. I am the starting forward for the Gateway Field Hockey Club U-19 team and the varsity field hockey team at John Burroughs School. Field hockey has been an integral part of my life since I was 10. My most memorable game was the 2023 State Championship finals. The chill wind across the familiar turf reminded me of the heart-breaking loss in the prior year, but years of training have prepared me for this moment. It was the passion for field hockey, the perseverance to practice every day, the curiosity to continue learning new moves, the discipline to follow the coach’s plans, and the resilience to remain calm in losing games to bring me where I am. Yet, what motivates me the most is sharing the game with my team. I vividly remember our exhausting practices, our frustration after tough losses, but also the incredible joy to toss my stick and sprint to the huddle to celebrate after our wins. Field hockey has brought me the greatest feelings in my life and I look forward to playing in college. At school, I have learned to efficiently balance my time between challenging academics and field hockey. I take numerous high-level courses and continue to excel with exceptional grades. I am ready to take my field hockey and academic studies to the next level at college.
