My name is Isla McCallum (pronounced “eye-lah”). I have been playing field hockey since fifth grade when I joined a youth team through my high school feeder program. By my seventh-grade year, I loved the sport and knew I wanted to play more competitively. I started playing winter and spring for the FHLife club team. I love the new friendships, discipline, and opportunity to play against top players in the nation. I am working towards playing in college.
My greatest assets have always been my athleticism, speed, and coachability. Growing up I have played and excelled at many sports: soccer, basketball, volleyball, softball, swimming, track and field. Once I knew I wanted to play field hockey at the next level, I focused more on improving my stick skills and field hockey IQ. I accomplish this through camps, local clinics, small groups, and traveling with my club to play top club teams. I have been working out with a strenght and agility trainer to improve my strength.
The high school I attend has a long rich history of field hockey and state championships. I was honored in my first year to be a starter and lead scorer on a successful JV team and also earned a Varsity letter. I lettered again in my second year and helped the team end the season 16-3-2 and ranked #5 in the state and #20 in the Great Lakes Region. My primary position in school and club is Left Wing/Forward. I have played defense and center mid positions indoors and love being in offensive and defensive penalty corners. I believe you play where the coach and the team need you the most. Playing various positions is the best way for me to learn the game. A proud moment was at the 2022 Festival in Tampa, where I was named to the All-Star team for sportsmanship.
I am in my second year at Bishop Watterson taking college prep courses. It is important to me to be involved in my community. I participate in multiple service activities including volunteering at my Church, meal service for family shelters, and with the Special Olympics. I also help a community youth camp teaching field hockey to kids from underserved communities.
My goal is to enter a college program focused on either nutrition or athletic training. I want to find the right college match and add value as a player and teammate in a field hockey program.
