Growing up in Wisconsin, I had never heard of field hockey or even seen a field hockey stick until middle school. After nearly a decade of experience in both soccer and softball, I came to the conclusion that I truly loved the camaraderie and team spirit of team sports.
Looking ahead to my future in athletics, however, I admitted to myself that I did not really love soccer, and my high school did not have a softball team at that time. Therefore, I finally allowed my best friends to convince me to try field hockey in 7th grade. Instantly, I fell in love. My background in athletics gave me the basic spacial awareness, determined attitude, and physical fitness that was required of me to succeed as an athlete on the field hockey field. My love for the game grew as I did, and I soon joined a club team and continued to play through high school.
My field hockey experience has been the most positive, collaborative, and fun athletic experience of my life so far. At the same time, however, my main focus as I look towards college is academics. Fortunately, as has been the case in high school, I believe that excellence in athletics and academics go hand-in-hand. I know I am a better student because of sports, and I know that I am a better athlete because I exercise my mind. The personal growth I have experienced during my time playing field hockey is incredible, and I hope to extend this experience through my time in college.
