Playing sports is what has motivated me to succeed in school. From the time I began kindergarten I have had to work much harder then most of my classmates. In the beginning, my parents thought I was only delayed in the areas of speech and language. But by the time I was in second grade, they realized that it was more than just a delay. After many different tests, it was determined that I had several learning disabilities, all of which were hindering my progress in school. Over the years I have worked with tutors and educational therapists. I have been through speech therapy, audio processing therapy, and vision therapy. And, with the insistence of my mom, I've spent countless hours playing learning games and practicing memory strategies. It has taken a lot of perseverance, determination, and patience, to continue working to maintain satisfactory grades throughout all of my years of school. But, the goal of playing sports in college, has, and still is, continuing to motivate me.
Beyond the classroom my commitment, dedication, and hard work, has also helped me to achieve another goal. After 11 years of involvement with The Boyscouts of America, I recently attained the honorable rank of Eagle Scout. With the help of family, friends, and other scouts, we dedicated over 250 hours of volunteer service to design and build an outdoor garden patio area. The project included paving walkways and a patio area, building benches for seating, and landscaping surrounding gardens. The beneficiary of my Eagle Scout Leadership Project was my previous school, the one which I attended for six years. During seventh and eighth grades, my friends and I wished we had a separate area to go, away from all the younger kids, for lunch and breaks. Last year, when it came time to decide on a project plan, I was excited to be able to implement the ideas and desires I had had, when I attended the school. It was very satisfying to build something for present and future students of the school. During the process of the project, I learned that I'm interested in possibly pursuing careers in construction management, architecture, and heavy equipment operations.
My struggles in school have been very difficult to deal with, but it has taught me how to be resourceful and persevere, even when something seems impossible. My involvement in Boyscouts has been fun and exciting, and it has taught me many practical skills that I will use for the rest of my life. Playing sports makes me happy and gives me the feeling of value as a person. It's the one thing that has always given me confidence and makes me feel successful. Sports is my constant source of motivation to achieve anything in life.
