Personal Statement
I grew up kicking a ball around the soccer field while my family followed my older sister's club soccer team around the region. Everyone always assumed I would play soccer in college until I tried out for the Terriers football team the summer between middle school and high school. I found out that not only was it fun to kick and punt but I was really good at it as well. I worked hard all summer and earned both the starting kicker and punter positions on the varsity team my freshman year. I was recognized for both positions by the South Seven conference that fall. My sophomore year I was injured mid-way through the football season at a soccer game and had arthroscopic knee surgery the following spring. I came back in great shape for my junior year and again had a good season. I ended the year as the second leading scorer on the team with 37 points. Most notably, in the game against Waterloo, IL, I had six touchbacks, 5/5 PATs and 1/1 field goal to help lead my team to a hard fought victory against a team that had beaten us soundly the last two years. The feeling I had after the game helped me decide that I want to pursue football in college, either as a kicker or punter or in a dual role.
I believe that I can make a positive difference on a team and in a game and I'm willing to do what it takes to be a solid contributor on a college football team. I am 6'1" tall, weigh 200 pounds, and kick soccer-style with my right leg. I have excellent eye/hand/leg coordination and I am working out with a personal trainer to continue to strengthen my overall fitness and agility. My preference for college focuses on a solid educational opportunity followed by a geographic preference for the middle part of the United States. This would give my family the opportunity to visit me at college and to watch me play but I have not eliminated any locations from consideration. I have not selected a major but I do have a strong interest in earth sciences, forensics, and engineering. The size of the college or university is not critical to me nor is the size of the community where it is located. I live in a rural college town and have grandparents in greater Chicago and have grown up in both environments.
I would like to be part of a team where I can find a balance between my goal of being a freshman starter and my other goal of playing for a very competitive team. With my dedication to kicking and focusing on continuous improvement, I believe I can quickly contribute to any team by making the special teams a key factor in playing consistently and winning games. I look forward to having an opportunity to show you what I can do and to meet with you in person to see if my skills and goals are a match with your football program.
