Football is what makes me really happy. Starting football this year has meant so much to me. Joining the football team this year has given me lots of opportunities and taught me a lot of lessons. It has brought me a lot of friends too. I first wanted to join the football team because I thought it would be a cool sport to play which people always recommended to me. Finding football was the perfect fit because it gave me the space to use my physical strength and find my passion. After joining the football team this year, I can’t imagine my life without it.
I first found out that I really liked football when I played my first summer scrimmage against a school in our district. While playing the game, I got to use my physical strengths which I was not able to use in any other spaces. I was able to play a sport that I performed well in. I practiced daily once I was officially on the team. It made me feel good about myself; it boosted my overall confidence. It provided me a space where I could be out in public and be my best self. Growing up, I have struggled with my anger and my emotions with friends and in school. I was always told to calm down and to suppress my anger. Moving my body and being on the field provided me with a space where I could let my emotions go and release my tensions through moving and playing a sport. This was both therapeutic and cathartic for me.
Over the summer, I worked on my football skills everyday once I joined the team. Since joining the team I have been able to focus on myself more. I started getting into my body and health. I started to work out regularly and also play football which helped me get better at sports and my overall health. It was also helping me mentally. In addition to building skills about caring for my body and for my health I built relationships in my school community that I never had before. Before I used to struggle with being bullied or treated differently so it made me quiet and not as trusting to those around me especially at school. But over time I started connecting with my team mates. Eventually joking around with them and hanging out with them. Throughout this I learned to trust my teammates and to be more social. Also, I learned how to be more disciplined. Keeping good grades in school while also playing football Has taught me to always keep a schedule. Overall I think football always made me who I was supposed to be as a person because in football as a lineman, you always have protect your quarterback and be a leader for your team. This is a role I have been in my entire life. Football just gave me the discipline and skills to finally be seen for it. As I reach adulthood, I feel like football has impacted my life by giving me amazing relationships with my teammates, coaches, and even better connections with family members also. I feel like this team and football in my life has given me a plan in life that I really want to go away and do better in life.
To me football means growth and a brotherhood. In the future I hope my experience with football will help me get to my goals. I hope to go to college to play football. I want to play football so that I have the skills necessary to eventually reach my dreams of working in sports. I hope to one day be in the NFL and if not work in sports someway maybe as a coach. By learning discipline and becoming strong I will be able to reach my goals.
