At North High School, “SISU,” is the word we use when we face a significant challenge. SISU, a Finnish word, means perseverance in the face of extraordinary adversity. I have faced plenty of adversity throughout my Football career, but none greater than this 2016 season. During the summer, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease and dropped to 119 pounds, but I was able to return to the team the week before our first practice because of great medical care, support from my family, teammates and coaches, and my commitment to persevere.
During the second game of the season our first three quarterbacks went down, and I was called-on to move from receiver to quarterback in the middle of the 2nd half. I spent the rest of the season splitting time between 2nd string quarterback and receiver, acting as the play caller in both positions. Even with this challenge I was named to the Honorable Mention All-City Team as a receiver.
I have lettered in varsity in three sports since sophomore year and I have suited-up for all three (Football, Basketball, and Baseball) since Freshman year at Wichita North, which is in the largest class in Kansas enrolling about 2,100 students. North is a diverse school that includes many students speaking Spanish as their first language, and I have been a trusted leader to all, translating plays to my non-English-speaking teammates. I have been selected to act as a Captain of my Football team, am a 4.0 student, and scored a 35 on the ACT.
I want to attend a strong academic school that will be a good fit for me in Football as well. I believe I have the work-ethic, ability, leadership, and competitiveness to play at a high-level and to contribute to your program.
