Personal Statement

NOTE  -  CLICK ON FILES/SCHEDULES/PRESS LINKS FOR MY SR. HIGHLIGHTS VIDEO

After loosing most of my sophomore year to an ALC/MCL/Meniscus injury, I returned to the starting line-up for my Junior year, and being from a small Single A school with only about 30 players, I  had to play several different positions depending on the opponent and the need of our team.  During my time at Cambridge Springs High School I played both guard and center. On defense, I was called upon to play DE, DT, N, and LB. The only time I left the field was for kick-off and kick-off return. I realize this is both good and bad depending on one's perspective. It is good in that it shows my durability. It is bad in that I have been more of a generalist than a specialist.  HOWEVER, prior to my senior season, my family moved to Belfast, Maine.  On Defense I was the Captain and focused solely on my responsibilities as an ILB.  Offensively, I played every position on the line.   One of the traits that my coaches have always said makes me stand-out is my work ethic. I am a guy who will do whatever my coach tells me to and I will give 110% every time. That applies to the classroom, on the practice field,on the playing field, in the training facilities and in public settings. I take my education seriously as my first priority because football isn't going to give me a career for the rest of my life. As a member of a team I bring leadership through my example which includes never complaining to fellow teammates or coaches about tough situations and by approaching everything with intensity and passion, whether it be a drill in practice or the last play of the game. Additionally, I also work to be a positive influence on my teammates through words of encouragement and motivation. In both of these and in all of life, I draw on my faith as my main source of strength. While natural talent is certainly something many people have, I believe even more important than talent is hard-work, determination and character.  My ACL injury causes me know even more clearly the hard-work and determination required to excel - and while not all my stats have been regained yet, I worked my tail off to be ready to go. It helps that I love to train! As a student and as an athlete, I am willing to do whatever it takes to get better and make any improvements necessary to become the best person I can be. I recognize that I am not a player that is loaded with natural talent as are many others; however, I have taken that perceived weakness and turned it into one of my greatest assets because I understand that I have to work harder than some others if I wish to excel. Sometimes those with natural ability take many things for granted and assume that those abilities will carry them throughout life. I often find the hardest working guy I can and then I do everything I can to work harder than him. I have a hard time being satisfied until I have done everything possible to become the best that I can be. Recognizing the effort and work I must put forth to excel as a student-athlete, and recognizing the positive influence I seek to be upon those around me, I believe I would be a valuable part of any team I have the chance to participate on, and I look forward to that opportunity in college.
