Personal Statement

When I was young my mom encouraged me to participate in physical activities such as gymnastics due to my abundance of energy.  In grade school she always made me play up on my older brother's teams.  My parents were not athletes and consequently didn't know the rules of football, baseball, basketball, and track and field.  This resulted in me having to teach them the rules and strategies as I learned them.

In seventh grade coaches and my friends encouraged me to play football because of my size. I would soon come to love the sport because of the extreme physicality, bonding with teammates, and the competitiveness.

I never knew I was competitive or aggressive until I started playing football. Through the sport, I developed my athletic abilities and a strict work ethic.  I have also become more confident and am able to tune out the negative talk from others. This past season I have learned time management skills as I navigated the difficult task of finding a balance between high school, family, football, and friends.

School is important to me and I try my best to get good grades. My favorite subjects are science and English. I attempt to take the most challenging classes possible.  While I don’t know what career I will pursue, I know I want to attend a selective college.

Something in my life that I struggle with is Attention Deficit Disorder.  At times it is difficult to focus in class and to sit down and complete my homework.  I have learned to be proactive to help compensate for this. For example, I try to get homework done early in the day because I know I will be tired later.  At school, after I eat lunch, I spend the rest of the lunch period in the library studying and completing work.  While some would say ADD is a negative I have learned to turn it into my super power as I feel I have more energy than teammates.  My ability to hyper-focus, a characteristic of my ADD, gives me an edge over opponents especially in game situations as it allows me to eliminate distractions and only focus on my job on the football field.

I am looking forward to the coming years of putting in the work to improve both on and off the football field. Whether it be in the classroom, weight room, or field, I plan to perform to the best of my abilities and excel in all areas.
