In my junior football season, I was awarded the “Big Team, Little Me” signifying my selfless attitude and dedication to my team. However, to me, this award was not won only in my junior year, but is a testament to the dedication I had throughout my high school football career. In my freshman year, I broke my left wrist and had surgery on it that next summer. My doctor told me that there was a chance I would not play at all my sophomore year, but I chose to stick it out for the whole season and not give up. I never missed a practice that season, but I only played three games that year on JV with limited minutes at fullback. I have never missed a football practice in high school and have only missed a few track practices due to illness.
During my sophomore season, one of my coaches suggested that I switch to the secondary, because I had the build of a safety. Having played almost every position in grade school, I was open to changing positions, so I took his advice and switched to safety for my junior season. Through a lot of hard work in the offseason and during practice, I found my way into the starting spot on the varsity team. I put in even more effort during the season and was awarded Honorable Mention All-Conference. Now, during the offseason, I am putting in the same amount of effort and also taking a leadership role in the team.
It was also during junior year that I started to give more effort in school. I attend a Jesuit all-boys school and raised my GPA almost a half a point from sophomore year. I realized how important my classes were going to be in my future. This realization not only encouraged me to make a difference in my own grades, but it encouraged me to make a difference in other students’ grades, too. I began to tutor underclassmen to help them raise their grades and help them have the same realization I had.
I love the game of football, and I am not ready for my senior year to be my last year. I want to play college football more than anything else, and I am willing to make a lot of sacrifices to achieve this goal. I thank you for your interest in making this happen for me.
