My name is John Huang, from Vancouver, British Columbia, class of 2026. There are many reasons why I am a great candidate for your program.
Firstly, I am an extremely hard worker, every time you need me to put in the effort to work on something, I will always deliver and put in extra work any chance that I can get. I understand that there are also lots of hard working players that might be more talented than me, but what sets me apart from them is the way I keep myself motivated to push me out of my comfort zone every single time I work; First of all, I always keep myself motivated because I want to keep on playing the game I love. I work hard because I enjoy the process of getting better, not because of impressing others. Aside from that, I always remind myself to get better everyday. For example, I would write down a list of things that will keep me motivated and put it as my phones screensaver, whether if it’s making my family proud, my ultimate goal of playing college basketball or proving to the people who never believed in me. that’s just one of the many ways for me to keep my foot on the gas at all times.
Second of all, one of the most important things to me when stepping on the court is effort, there will always be ups and downs during a basketball game, sometimes I might have a really good game, but sometimes things might not always go my way. But one thing that never changes for me is effort, no matter what the case is, I can always dive for loose balls, sprint back on defence, giving my full effort boxing out and more.
Thirdly, I excel as a leader in various ways. As a point guard, I ensure my teammates are involved in every play and that everyone is fulfilling their responsibilities. To me, communication is crucial; I actively communicate on both the offensive and defensive ends, constantly coordinating with coaches and teammates to ensure we are on track. This extends beyond the court, as effective communication is vital off the court as well. Whenever someone faces issues, whether interpersonal, family-related, or stress-induced, I encourage them to talk to me. This helps them resolve their problems and stay focused and in the right mindset for the game.
On the skill side of my game, I am a great shooter off the catch or creating my own shot, I am good at reading the defence to make the right move, I demonstrate great footwork and I am always a hustler on the defensive end. Furthermore, I make good reads coming off screens, I am a great passer and I always find a way to stay composed during a game.
Lastly, I am very academically driven, as a student-athlete, student always comes first, I am very focused on my academics and it has always been important for me to get good grades, as of right now, I have an average of all A’s, but I still have lots of room to improve and prepare for AP and SAT. In terms of university major, I would like to get into the business world, such as management, finance, marketing, economics, communications and much more. To conclude, I am also very coachable and always willing to take in advice and criticism to improve my game and I hope to connect and learn with many of you during my highschool years.
