My name is John Huang, from Vancouver, British Columbia, class of 2026. There are many reasons why I am a great candidate for your program. Firstly, I am an extremely hard worker, everytime you need me to put in the effort to work on something, I will always deliver and put in extra work any chance that I can get. I understand that there are also lots of hard working players that might be more talented than me, but what sets me apart from them is the way I keep myself motivated to push me out of my comfort zone every single time I work. For example, I would write down a list of things that will keep me motivated and put it as my phones screensaver, whether if it’s making my family proud, making my coaches proud or proving to the people who never believed in me, that’s just one of the many ways for me to keep my foot on the gas at all times. Second of all, one of the most important things to me when stepping on the court is effort, there will always be ups and downs during a basketball game, sometimes I might have a really good game, but sometimes things might not always go my way. But one thing that never changes for me is effort, no matter what the case is, I can always dive for loose balls, sprint back on defence, giving my full effort boxing out and more. Thirdly, I bring lots of leadership to the team. As a point guard, I understand my role is to get my teammates in touch every single play and make sure everyone is doing their job. To me, communication is key, I am an active speaker on the offensive end and the defensive end, constantly communicating with coaches and my teammates to make sure we are doing the right things. Communication is not just important on the court, it is also very important off the court, as a leader, whenever someone is not happy with each other, having trouble with family and friends, or stressing about something. I always tell my guys to come talk to me if they need any help, this would help them solve their issues off the court and also be in the right mood to play. On the skill side of my game, I would say that I am a great shooter off the catch or creating my own shot, I am good at reading the defense to make the right move, I demonstrate great footwork and I am always a hustler on the defensive end. Lastly, I am very academically driven, as a student-athlete, student always comes first, I am very focused on my academics and it has always been important for me to get good grades, as of right now, I have an average of all A’s, but I still have lots of room to improve and prepare for AP and SAT. In terms of university major, I would like to get into the business world, such as management, finance, marketing, economics, communications and much more. To conclude, I am also very coachable and always willing to take in advice and criticism to improve my game and I hope to connect and learn with many of you during my highschool years.
