My name is Jared Layne, I attend Hollywood Senior High School, and I’m a 5’10 dual sport athlete. When I first started running track it was to stay in shape for basketball season until I realized that I could actually compete with the right amount of training. As a freshman not qualifying for league finals and always finishing third or fourth in meets made me poised for a much better sophomore year. My PR improved from a 12.43 to an 11.56 within a year. Although my junior year has yet to happen I think my sophomore year will have been the most memorable to me so far because of all the work I’ve put in. My first two years as a student athlete in high school were huge learning experiences for me. I believe there is only room for improvement from here.
My freshman and sophomore years at Bishop Montgomery I was apart of a real team. We valued family, teamwork, academics, and everybody getting better. My coaches, family, and other supporting cast believed I was talented enough to compete at a high level, I just needed to believe in myself. My talent, leadership, and work ethic let me know I can compete at the next level. As a student-athlete I want to compete at a program that challenges me academically as well as athletically. I may not be the best yet but, with the work I’ve been putting in to get to this point I know I am well on my way in my journey as a student-athlete.
I took a break from track last year as I am double athlete with basketball and our season ran late. I ran 2 meets and I realized I was emotionally exhausted. My mom had been really sick, my god- father was ill, we suffered several family losses during the last 6 months and I just needed to rest. It’s my senior year and I am determined to finish strong and look forward to my journey at the collegiate level.
