Personal Statement

Hi coach. My name is Malachi McDowell. I am a transfer student who plays both PG and SG position. I have 3 years of eligibility left and is looking for a team that would be a good fit for me.  I love to play up tempo, set up my team mates to score, drive and score the basketball. I have always tried to live my life in a way that is consistent with what is important to me.  God, family, and basketball. Last year I was given the opportunity to play in the NAIA conference. I was voted first team all conference  and first team all tournament.  I have prepared myself to get to the next level by adopting a good work ethic. I train hard and I play hard.  As a player, I am always looking for ways to improve my game and develop.  What makes me a good candidate for any school is that I am a Godfearing, respectable young man, who believes that both hard work and team work makes me a winner.  I am very  competitive, Love to win, and is team focused. I can handle the ball well. I have a pass-first mentality, but can score the basketball at will to give my team an edge.  I respect my coaches and teammates.  If given the opportunity I believe that I would be an asset to any School's program.

  • Malachi McDowell, of Loxahatchee (FL) Seminole Ridge, is a 6'1 150lb 2019 prospect from our Summer 2018 Charlottesville camp. College coaches on camp staff identified Malachi as having scholarship potential.Malachi has a decent wingspan, which can be even more effective with active hands/feet. Additionally, the prospect appears to have decent size for position but should use their size to be a pesky defender. The player does a decent job of distributing the basketball. With continued emphasis ofseeing the whole floor at all times and basic passing practice drills; that skill will continue to improve. In terms of ball handling, the prospect showed promise and has the potential to develop strong handle with continued work through daily ball handling work. The prospect displayed an improving basketball IQ during camp. Through continued emphasis on making the right play at the right time through watching/learning the game, it can be a big advantage in recruiting and earning minutes. A big part of IQ is shot selection. Malachi In terms of shot selectiondoes a decent job of knowing when there is proper time and space to shoot the ball and should continue develop this knowledge through watching how this is done at various college levels. Making the extra pass and taking only open in-rhythm shots will make this player a joy to coach in college. The prospect displayed solid shooting mechanics that will continue to develop with form shooting and made game speed repetitions. We recommend making at least 750 game speed shots a day off the screen(curl/fades), off the bounce, spot shooting, etc. The talent was a decent finisher around the rim. With continued work finishing through traffic with either hand, through contact, and developing more finishing moves, the player will become a threat at the rim. The talented player has solid athletic ability for size and age. ScoutsFocus would like to see continued development in speed/agility and vertical development. Jump rope drills are great full body conditioning drill we highly recommend if not ready for a rigorous weight-training program. We would like to see continued strength development whether it is via traditional strength training means or body weight military type development(pushups/pull-ups). Combined with the player's developing frame, the player will be physically competitive with continued work in the weight room. The talent has a decent motor(highly coveted skill by college coaches). We would like to see continued understanding that every possession is a priority and from what we saw, toughness from the player was shown occasionally at camp. The player showed flashes on the defensive end of having the potential to be a reliable defender and should continue to focus on individual and team defensive concepts emphasized at camp. Malachi has scholarship potential with continued hard work and development both in the classroom and on the hardwood. Can play the PG. AAU Team: Acreage Select. • Malachi McDowell, of Loxahatchee (FL) Seminole Ridge Community High, is a 5'11 150lb 2019 prospect from our Spring 2018 ORL camp. College coaches on camp staff identified Malachi as having scholarship potential. Malachi has a great wingspan that gives the player the potential to be a lock down defender and can be even more effective with active hands/feet. Additionally, the prospect appears to have very good size for position when used properly remains advantageous on both sides of the ball. Thevery talented passer does a fantastic job distributing and seeing the floor. The player is always anticipating when and where teammates will be open, a highly coveted trait in the team sport. In terms of ball handling, it was one of the strongest aspects of the player's game. The player makes great use of change of speed and change of direction. Basketball IQ was one of the player's greatest strengths routinely making the right play at the right time. There was a great emphasis on making the right play, which will be a big advantage in recruiting and separating from others. A big part of IQ is shot selection. Malachi does an excellent job of shooting the basketball with rhythm and possesses high-level knowledge between good/bad shots. This advantage will continue to develop by watching how this is done at various college levels. Making the extra pass and taking only open in-rhythm shots proved to be a very reliable asset for the prospect. The prospect showed they were an extremely reliable shooter throughout camp. Shooting will continue to develop with form shooting and made game speed repetitions. We recommend making at least 500 game speed shots a day off the screen(curl/fades), off the bounce, spot shooting, etc. The talent did a tremendous job of finishing around the rim at the highest level. With great touch and composure with both hands, the player is nearly impossible to stop around the basket unless Dikembe Mutombo makes a comeback! The talented player is an exceptional athlete proving to be an advantage on both ends of the floor having athleticism that is in the upper quartile of competitors. The prospect is very strong for their age. The college game is an entirely different beast so continued strength development is crucial to prepare going against 23-24 year-olds. Combined with the player's solid frame that should to continue to build year around, the player will be physically ready to play at the next level. The talent has a non-stop relentless motorthat really impressed our on staff college coaches during camp. This is a skill college coaches highly covet and will be blown away watching the talented prospect and from what we saw, the player had a physical and mental toughness that coaches at the next level will love. The player showed a great understanding and effort on the defensive side of the ball and should continue to focus on individual and team defensive concepts emphasized at camp. Malachi has scholarship potential with continued hard work and development both in the classroom and on the hardwood. Can play the 1. AAU Team: . • Lake Worth survives Santaluces, advances to district championship game
  • The Lake Worth Trojans held off the Santaluces Chiefs in a back-and-forth contest, 49-48, to advance to the District 9A-10 championship game. The playoff win was retribution for a pair of regular season losses for Lake Worth, as Santaluces took both regular season matchups between the two teams, including a triple-overtime thriller in early December. “We lost in triple overtime, we were up by 17 in the third quarter and lost, so we’ve done everything but beat them, but give them credit because they beat us twice and they’re a very good team,” said Lake Worth head coach Murray Smith. A wide open layup for Ariel Joseph opened the night’s scoring for Lake Worth before Santaluces’ Kemari Brown exchanged threes with Joseph, who had five points in the first minute of play. Brown scored five early points of his own and the teams were knotted at seven early on. The Trojans went on a 6-0 run before a free throw for Santaluces stopped their scoring drought. It was all Chiefs at the start of the second quarter, with Santaluces cutting their deficit to just one. The Trojans would respond with four straight points of their own, but the scoring runs would continue, with Santaluces scoring six straight to take the lead. The lead went back and forth until the teams were tied at 24. From there, the Trojans were able to jump out to a six-point lead as Santaluces’ offense struggled with turnovers and missed shots. The Lake Worth lead was at five going into halftime. A 7-2 run coming out of halftime gave Lake Worth a ten point advantage three minutes and 15 seconds into the third quarter. The lead would hover between eight and 10 points for the next four minutes before free throws by Santaluces junior guard Crisnel Francois cut the Trojans’ lead to six. A three at the third quarter buzzer by Brown had Santaluces trailing by just a possession, 41-38, heading into the fourth quarter. Both squads started the final frame slowly, exchanging turnovers and empty offensive possessions until a mid-range jumper by Santaluces’ Justin Roseme cut the gap to one. An offensive rebound and putbuck on Lake Worth’s next possession pushed their lead back to three before a triple by Chance Dixon tied things at 43 for the Chiefs with just under five minutes to play. A 5-0 run for Lake Worth ended with a Santaluces layup that made it a one-possession game again as the game clock approached two minutes. Santaluces senior guard Ryan O’Connor missed one of two at the line with 1:16 left to cut the Lake Worth lead to two, and a steal and layup off the ensuing inbound by King Matelus knotted the teams at 48 just eight seconds later. The Trojans burned 40 seconds off the clock with their next possession, which ended with Malachi McDowell making one of two at the line to give them a one-point lead. Santaluces drove to the rim with ten seconds to play, but a game-saving block on the play turned possession over to Lake Worth with free throws coming. Despite a miss by Avery Brooks on the front end of a one-and-one, Santaluces couldn’t advance the ball up the floor and knock down a game-winning shot. Wednesday’s loss signals the end of the road for a Santaluces team that went 18-7 in the regular season. “They fought hard, you know how kids are,” said Santaluces head coach Reggie Dixon. “They fought hard when they were down and when they’re not down, they’re going to relax, but I’m not taking anything away from Lake Worth.” Dixon says the loose balls and second-chance points that the Trojans were able to get were indicative of a team that wanted it more. The close loss can serve as a learning experience for the returning Santaluces players, giving them a little extra motivation heading into next season. “If they stick around and stay with the program, I think (this loss) will help them build and make them hungrier,” said Dixon. “We’ve got to get back to work, get back in the gym and then we’ll see what happens.” On the other side, Lake Worth was able to close out another close win. The Trojans haven’t won a game by more than six points since the start of February. “That’s been the story of the last three weeks, we have not won many games by many points,” said Smith. Lake Worth will advance to the district championship on Friday against the Atlantic Eagles, who defeated Park Vista in double overtime on Wednesday night to secure their spot in the finals. “A chance to compete against a good team, and a rival game on top of that,” said Smith. “We split during the year, so flip a coin.”
