Brandon Merritt '21 Recruiting Profile

As a seven year old, my parents had me memorize a saying "be a good person, be a good student, and be a good athlete."  That saying has stayed with me to this day.   On the court, I have been consistently known as "unselfish".  For me it is simple, teams that win, consistently work together.  Being a point guard, I take pride in being unselfish.  This allowed me to be the only player moved up to Varsity in my Freshman year.  It also allowed me to be a major contributor to my team winning its first 3A Regional and Sectional Championships last year.

Academically, I have consistently been a good student.  Currently, I attend University High School, which is a laboratory school affiliated with Illinois State University. Not only am I learning in a traditional sense, University High is teaching me how to develop strong study habits in a very independent environment.  While I am still developing as a student, I am definitely getting prepared for college.

Because, of my dad's career, I moved several times in my childhood.  While this was challenging at times, it taught me resiliency, courageousness and forced to communicate well, when necessary.  These traits definitely translate to the way I play point guard today.   My teammates can count on me to get them involved, defend the best player on the court and encourage and challenge them on a daily basis.  While I am far from perfect, I still commit to being a good person, student, and athlete.
