Personal Statement

I have been a varsity player my entire high school career, which is very unusual in our program where seniority is a very high priority.  I am wanting to pursue a great education while playing a sport I love.  I am social, get along well with others, and a team player.  I possess strong leadership and communication skills, as evidenced by my nomination to Natural Helpers club - one of only a few select males elected by my fellow student peers.  My teammates are very important to me, and I have always gone out of my way to get to know new players on my travel teams.   A sophomore on my high school team just experienced the death of his father 2 days before Father's Day this year, and I am offering support as he struggles through this difficult time.  I got to know him very well when he was a freshman, even though upperclassmen tend to exclude freshman traditionally at our school.  I chose not to play travel ball this summer as my experience the prior two years has been disappointing with no team ball and poor coaching.  This summer I have spent a lot of time in the gym sharpening my shooting skills and getting stronger.

My high school coaches comment on my exceptional athletic skills, explosiveness, and jumping ability.  They have encouraged me to be a multi-sport athlete, but, in the last 2 years, I have focused solely on basketball, as it is my passion.   One of the highlights of my career so far is the game against New Albany when I played against Romeo Langford.  I got the tip against him, and, although we got beaten by quite a bit, the New Albany head coach personally commended me on my basketball skills, effort, and attitude.  I enjoy playing against high quality players who challenge me to become better.  College basketball will allow me the chance to compete against exceptional players on a regular basis and push me to become a higher caliber player.  I think I would be a great asset to a college team both on and off the court, and I look forward to the opportunity.
