I moved from Hong Kong to Toronto at the end of summer 2017 going into grade 9. Grade 8 had actually been my first year of playing competitive basketball, and since then it has always been my goal to play basketball at as high a level as I can. Not knowing what to expect in Toronto, the drastically higher talent level overall shocked me, but against all odds I made my school's U16A team in grade 9. I participated in varsity open gyms, learning what I could. In grade 10, I returned to the U16A team, becoming a key contributor and being named co-captain through my leadership. I also walked onto a competitive AAU program where I made strides in my game and overall development.
I believe my work ethic sets me apart. In the summers of 2017, 2018 and 2019 I have worked relentlessly at my game, going through intense skill workouts every day as well as strength and conditioning sessions to improve my overall athleticism. Under little-to-no guidance (as I was in Hong Kong during these summers), I made use of whatever resources I could to train hard and smart, putting myself through three-a-days sometimes, researching and learning the game.
Apart from basketball, I was also late to the game of football - I had never played nor even watched a game prior to coming to Toronto. Not knowing the positions or rules, I barely touched the field as a member of the junior varsity team in grade 9. However, a year later in grade 10 I had become the starting safety and played every single defensive down. Now in grade 11, I am entering the varsity team training camp. I think this is a testament to my perseverance and determination, and that I will stop at nothing to achieve something that I really want.
As a student-athlete, I believe success in school is equally important to my athletic goals, and I have consistently achieved highly as a student throughout my academic career. I am currently going through the rigorous IB program offered at my school, one of the most academically prestigious institutions in Canada.
While I have yet to make a significant impact in terms of team and individual success, I truly believe I am poised for a breakout year. I am grateful to my parents, teachers and coaches for their support and mentorship as I strive to reach my goal. Take a chance on me and I will give my all to the program.
