Personal Statement
I'm Jake Scheide, a 6'2" sixteen year old senior (academically accelerated) committed to playing collegiate basketball in America. I'm a slashing wing player with a developing jumpshot and rapidly improving ball-handling. My greatest strength is penetrating and finishing strong at the rim through contact. I have excellent court vision and play my best within a structured system, using my creativity to shift the defense and not be robotic on the floor. My aspirations include representing my home country (Australia) on the national stage, as well as creating a business to help Australians fulfill their own dreams of playing college sports.
My leadership qualities compelled my coaches to name me captain of the varsity team for three years (being 13 years old sophomore year), unheard of in the school's history. Similarly, my academics are strong, currently boasting an unweighted senior GPA of 3.99 (4.33 scale) whilst taking four AP/IB HL (college credit) courses as of November '14. I'm a member of the MENSA high IQ society and was identified as a gifted student at a young age. My intelligence extends out of the classroom onto the court, resulting in a very high basketball IQ and ability to quickly learn systems.
If there are any questions about my ability to adapt to the American style of game or level of competition, I have film from the Hoop Group / Hoop Mountain academic camps I participated in this summer. My relentless defense and tough style of play overwhelmed many of my opponents, despite often guarding more athletic, older, and stronger players. Additionally, Coach Woody (Mike Woodbury) from MB Nation worked out with me in Portland this past summer, and I'd recommend talking with him to truly understand what I can bring to a team.
