Personal Statement

My mother and father also participated in sports while growing up, e.g., my mother: track and field and father: baseball, football, wrestling, and basketball (college intramural) which influenced my life to engage in various team sports.  Both my mother and father understand the game of basketball so they both coach and provide me with coaching opportunities to improve my knowledge, skills, abilities, and athleticism. In reference to education and doing well in school, I have no choice but to maintain high educational performance since my sister (elementary teacher), mother (adjunct college professor and program analyst), and father (adjunct college professor and engineer) are educators in their respective professions, as well as a grandparent and great grandparent.

I have been participating in team sports from the age of five to the present.  I played on team sports such as soccer, flag football, track and field, and basketball, which helped me development my athleticism.  Concerning basketball, I played on AAU and middle school teams before playing on the high school level.

During the summer of 2017, I attended my first out-of-state basketball camp, Kelvin Keatts Basketball Camp at the North Carolina State University, where my parent went to undergraduate college. I participated in one of the 4 or 5 high school groups, where my group placed 3rd in the playoffs.  Nevertheless, our coach provided feedback to each player and our parents.  The coach stated that I was the most unselfish player he has ever seen, and he wanted me to be more selfish because he had seen me make finishing moves, shoot and make midrange and three-pointers; however, I chose to provide several assists because of my court awareness.  Even during my high school games, I have high assist counts with an estimate of eight points per game.  Also, my high school coach has been playing shooting guard, small forward, and power forward because I have a high IQ for the game and these positions, as well as an excellent defensive player; hence, I am considered the sixth man position when I am not a starter of a game. Therefore, I appreciate the coach acknowledging my game and leadership by making be a co-captain for the team.

As I enter my sophomore year of high, my academic goals have not changed, i.e., aim for a 3.5/4.0 or better.  Although my freshman year ended with a 3.2 out of 4.0, I took at least one honors course, algebra. I am still pursuing a 3.5/4.0 grade point average by the end of high school so that I can apply and get into a college or university that has majors in engineering.  I will also be preparing for and taking the SAT and ACT in the coming years.  Concerning colleges and universities, I plan to major in engineering and play basketball.  I understand the effort it takes will be demanding, but I will do whatever it takes to main a 3.5/4.0 grade point average through my academic and athletic career.    With the support of an understanding and supportive family and coach, I can make this happen.  Who can predict the future? With dedication, good coaching and development, playing time, and family support, I believe professional basketball is a possibility.

As a student in middle school, I was a good student in all my subjects. At the same time, I played basketball, flag football, and soccer.   On arrival to high school, honors algebra was a pit more of a challenge than I expected.  My math grades began to suffer, and the math teacher did not seem to want to help.  Since I planned to attend college and major in engineering, my dad stated my math grades need to be very good, so I put a lot of time into doing the homework, reading the book, and asking questions in class. And yes, I stayed up late many of times.  To bring my grades up, I reached out to my mother and father.   My dad and I sit together for thirty to sixty minutes every other night to discuss the lectures we covered in class.  My dad had me to read, understand, and explain the examples in the book, as well as worked out the even number of problems in that section.  In general, he had how me to practice and understand the process and procedures of each type of problem.  He had me to work various math problems and explained to him how I worked each problem.  He would say to me, ‘this method is no different than learning and running the plays in basketball.’ As a result, I earned nineties to hundred on the homework assessments and quizzes, as well as ‘B+’ and ‘A’s’ on the tests.  At the end of the course, I earned an eighty-nine (89) – one-point shy of an ‘A.’

As a high school basketball player, I can play multiple positions on offense.  At six feet (6 ft.), 145 pounds, with a sizable wingspan and still growing, I have had the opportunity to play multiple positions (shooting guard, small forward, and power forward) during the same game; however, my primary and secondary positions are small forward and shooting guard, respectively.  To possess this skill means I have multitasking abilities to execute several positions and commit plays in my head.  Although I do not start all the time, I am usually the first player off the bench.  Also, I have an excellent defensive play, lateral quickness, passing, court vision, inbounding skills, and finishing.  In summary, I have the desired capabilities that are a beatable combination such as physical abilities of coordination and speed, intelligence on and off the court, mental toughness in willing to work hard and never give up, and high skill level in playing multiple positions.
