Personal Statement

My college goal is to become a successful student and determined student athlete. Throughout college, I would like to focus on getting my degree in criminal justice and athletic training, while playing competitive collegiate basketball. As a student athlete in college, I plan to continue with being a leader of the team, while continuing to learn as much as I can about the game of basketball. Basketball is my passion and I am determined to increase my ability and skills so I can play at the most competitive level possible. I believe I am a good candidate because my focused mindset allows me to show what I am capable of doing on and off the court; such as leading a team as point guard, while maintaining a 3.0 or higher GPA. As a young Senior and starting point guard on our high school Varsity basketball team, I often face opponents who are much older than I am, and I always keep my composure and am not intimidated by other competitors. I believe in my skills; I plan to enhance those skills, as well as developing and strengthening my weaknesses. I have always had the dream to become a college basketball player, and I plan to work hard to make that dream become a reality.

Our team (#1) went undefeated as we battled 4 games among other top players. Practicing skills such as moving without the ball, unselfish play, defensive drills, shooting, etc. allowed me to grow as a players. I worked hard at this camp, learned from college coaches, and am very appreciative to have this opportunity. I look forward to attending this camp again in order to grow as a player.

  • Camp/Event
  • Coach Hawkins Skills Academy/Eastern Shore's Top 60
  • 6/28/14 to 6/29/14
  • Coach Hawkins created this Skills Academy for the top 60 basketball players on the Eastern Shore. The top 30 middle school and high school players were selected to participate and chosen by area high school, travel, and college coaches. I was chosen as one of the top 30 middle school players and was honored to be able to be a part of this opportunity. On the second day of the camp, myself and a few others were chosen to play in the All Star Game. This camp taught us commitment and the guest speaker Andre Collins stressed to us the importance of sacrifice. I learned a great deal from this camp.
  • Camp/Event
  • VCU Basketball Tournament
  • 5/16/14 to 5/18/14
  • This was a good, competitive tournament for our travel team to participate in. Our team played some of the best team in the Eastern Region and we competed at the top level for all of the games we played that weekend. The high competitive level of the other teams forced our team to work through plays and adjust our speed together in order to successfully play.
  • Camp/Event
  • DMV Elite Camp
  • 4/12/14 to 4/12/14
  • Evaluation Report (age 13): ? Balance needs improvement but as a young player this is often seen and is sometimes contributed to growing and lack of consistency is practicing and playing this sport. ? Lower stance while dribbling needs to be more relaxed and natural. Shouldn’t squat but instead lean shoulders inward and stay over the ball. ? Keeps his head up almost all the time which is very positive and helps with developing as a good dribbler and passer as well as receiving instruction. ? When attacking the basket his stride should be longer to advance more quickly pass defenders. ? Has a good shot developing but floats just a little. When shooting focus on lifting up and coming down in the same space. He has good touch and control in the short range. He is likely to become a good shooter. Will need to get stronger in order to transfer his shooting ability to the long range. ? Work on strengthening the use of the left hand. Especially on left hand left side layups. Must establish better finger control of the ball. ? Overall energy, determination and willingness to learn is really good. This is key to develop more quickly.
  • Camp/Event
  • Naval Academy Basketball Camps
  • 6/27/11 to 6/28/13
  • I participated in this camp for 3 years. For the first 2 years, I completed the week-long camp and the 3rd year I completed the two-day shooting camp. Both camps helped me to learn teamwork and team skills. I enjoyed each camp because I learned a lot, was able to work with college players and coaches, and had the opportunity to play with athletes from all over Maryland and the surrounding states.
