Growing up, I have been surrounded by very active people. For example, my 80 year old grandparents still go skiing with me every winter. They are incredibly important role models to me that have inspired how I want my future self to be.
I have been playing Basketball ever since I could pick up a ball. I played multiple sports and learned to play two musical instruments at a very young age. I did not like having free time. Over time, I found myself doing things like playing soccer, baseball, or an instrument and realizing that I would rather be playing basketball. Quickly, basketball took over and I have been devoting all of my free time to playing ever since. Even so, the period of my life that has had the biggest impact on the person and athlete that I am today was when I couldn’t play at all. During the fall of my 8th grade year, I suffered an accident that put me on a medflight with a serious internal injury. I was ordered not to perform any physical activities for three months. By the 2nd week of being bedridden, I was already in a bad mental state. The only basketball that I got was watching the hoop sessions that I should’ve been playing in. I learned a lot from watching these sessions. I began to notice how basketball is more than dribbling, shooting, and passing. I noticed the different attitudes that people took to the game and how much of a mental sport it is. When I used to play, I would often let my emotions ruin my game. But as I was watching from the sideline, I realized how there are opportunities in every play/situation and I was taking my opportunities for granted. For the rest of my 3 months under the doctor's orders, I focused on the mental game of being a basketball player. Now, I am a positive communicator through each play and play through tiredness so I can find more opportunities. My goal is to make the best of every situation/opportunity, and if there isn’t already one, I will create one. I am going to work to create my opportunity to play at the college level while I pursue my education in architecture.
