Personal Statement

Sports have always been "My Life." From the time I could walk I was dribbling a basketball and swinging a bat. My love for basketball developed at an early age watching my cousin play at the collegiate level. I recall watching and thinking, "One day, I will play college basketball!" I'm striving towards that every day, and doing everything in my power to attain that goal. As a player, there are many attributes I have to offer a team. First, is my size and speed. Standing at 6'2", I am a very quick and coordinated player. My speed, as well as my jumping ability allowed me to become the team's best rebounder, ripping down 8.1 boards per game, along with the highest scorer at 18.2 points per game. Second, I am an extremely hard worker, and live by the motto, "If something is worth doing, it's worth doing right." I push tremendously hard in practice, in order to better myself daily. My work ethic was awarded by my coach, as I received the Hardest Worker award, as well as the team's M.V.P. The third attribute I bring to a team, is my leadership abilities. I am a great leader, on and off the court, who strives to better everyone around me. Last year, as Co-Captain, I worked hard to ensure that everyone on my team was doing their part in making us successful. Finally, I bring a great attitude every time I step on the court, and honestly believe that every day I play is a gift, and try to never take it for granted. Throughout my career, I have achieved personal success. As a freshman, I was a member of the varsity team, which at the time was a major accomplishment. At the end of my junior year, I was awarded 1st Team All Conference, as well as being selected a part of the KKOZ Dream Team. Also, as I stated before, I was my team's leading scorer and rebounder, as well as the M.V.P. During my sophomore year, I faced a major setback. In the second game of the season, I was undercut while going for a rebound, fracturing my wrist in two places, and had to sit out for the remainder of the season. For the rest of that season, I attended every practice and worked through the ball-handling drills left-handed. I worked very hard over that summer and the next fall, giving me the chance to accomplish all I did my junior year. Geographically, I would really prefer to stay in Missouri, as I'm a very family-oriented person. But, I am open to stepping out and am interested in any school in the United States. I am also open about what kind of school I will be attending. The division or size really doesn't matter to me as long as I'm getting the chance to play. My main athletic goal is to earn my spot at the collegiate level, and help to better my future team in every way possible. If given the chance to prove myself, I am confident that I will succeed. To play college basketball has been my lifelong goal, and I am determined to work everyday toward it, just as I have in the past. Attaining this goal will ensure that sports will continue to be "My Life." Garith Dedmon
