Personal Statement

Hello, my name is Luke Mercurio and I am a left handed, 6ft. 175 lb. player going into my senior year at the Hampton Bays High School on Long Island, N.Y. I know I can contribute a lot to your school, not only as a basketball player but as a student as well. I have played point guard, small forward and power forward on my varsity and AAU teams. The greatest of my talents on the court are being an aggressive defensive player, hustler and rebounder.  This year I received the Matt Howard award from Suffolk County which is an award for a player who comes to practice and works hard every day and who other teams "hate" to play because  he never gives up on a offense or defense.  I averaged 11 points a game as a starting sophomore on my varsity team winning the Mr. Hustle award and All-League honors. As a Co-Captain and starting junior, I averaged 14 points a game and 9 rebounds, receiving All-League honors, Matt Howard Award and NYS Leader of the Game Award.  I also made the Suffolk County Coaches Associaton Top 40 in September 2011.  I love the game of basketball, it is my passion and my goal is to play college ball. I have attended many camps including 3 years at UCONN with Jim Calhoun, 2 years at the Nike camp at Adelphi University on Long Island,  2 years at Five-Star Camp(selected as Most Outstanding Player and an All Star in 2011) and one year at Lycoming College. My AAU team is the Kendall Madison Playaz, we won the regional division championship in 2010, but did not go to nationals due to financial hardship. I also had private shooting lessons with one of my assistant varsity coaches on a weekly basis during the summer months('10). I am not positive of my major yet, possibly marketing or education, but will probably go undecided the first year of college.   Also, I would like to play basketball for a college that with my determination and dedication would give me the opportunity to earn a spot on the team and make a positive impact on the team. My coaches say that I have a motor that does not stop running and that I am a warrior on the court. I am open to the size of the college I attend, preferring to stay in NorthEastern U.S. if possible.
