Like many young athletes, I have had the dream to play sports in college. I didn't know that my path to getting to my dream would have so many bumps and hurdles!
I have always played sports and excelled in soccer, basketball, and football as a young athlete. Sports have been where I have gained confidence and where I always feel most happy. In my freshman year (2021), I had a tough ACL injury during football. I have to say, it was a big disappointment for me. My parents, coaches, teammates, and definitely my athletic trainer were my biggest supporters. I did rehab and training every day with my HS trainer and worked on weekends. I knew that I wanted to come back even stronger. With this hard work, I was able to be cleared in time for the start of the season. I felt strong and ready to be back. I earned the QB starting spot on the Varsity team and I was doing well. 3 games into the season another devastating blow. I was hit with a helmet in my left elbow (my dominant arm) during a play and fell on it awkwardly. I knew the minute I got up that I was hurt. To make a long story short, I went to the ER and my spirits were low. I got the x-ray results that I had broken my elbow and would need surgery. As soon as I saw the doctor, I asked if they could wrap my arm and allow me return to the game. I headed back to the game and stood on the sidelines to cheer for my team. I wanted them to know that yes, I was disappointed AGAIN, but I was not quitting. I worked even harder and was able to be cleared in 2 months. The doctors said the injuries were partly a result of growing too much too fast.
I ultimately transferred to a high school that is bigger and closer to my house. I played basketball at Monroe High School this fall. I was on the JV team, but got pulled up to play a few games and then the playoffs with the Varsity team.
I have had some low points in the last few years, but I am excited to be competing again and I look forward to letting coaches see what I can do. I have learned about patience, perseverance, and the importance of taking care of your mind and body from these injuries. I also am working to make sure that my grades are good and that I work to make my GPA better and more competitive. My parents are both educators and they always say that academics come first and that will be what I put first moving forward. I am motivated by sports, especially basketball. I am playing on an AAU team currently (TruElite in Union Co NC).
I pride myself on working hard, hustling no matter what, staying level-headed, and being the best teammate I can be. I have awarded the coaches' award because I am willing to play whatever position I need to that will help our team win.
My first years of High School definitely didn't go as planned, but I know I am not the one in ultimate control.
One day, I hope to inspire younger athletes to not give up when they are down and facing injuries...it WILL get better if you work hard and stay positive!
