Ryker Dykstra '23 Recruiting Profile

I have been playing basketball for the last 8 years and currently play for Ottawa Phoenix on their senior team. I also play on my high school senior team. I have always played multiple sports in school, even winning the Male All-round Athlete Award of my middle school's graduating class. I was first exposed to basketball when my mom signed me up for a summer camp when I was 8 years old and I was hooked after the first week. I was signed up for my region’s house league a few months later and as soon as I could try out for a competitive team, I did. During the summer months, for the past couple of years, I have coached for the Above The Rim basketball club, volunteering my time; it's fun and it helps me see the game from a different perspective. 

I am always working on my skills, diligently practicing as much as I can, working on improving. Even during Ontario’s extensive COVID lockdowns, I stayed in shape by running, practicing on zoom with my teammates and on my outside net every day. 

I believe I bring a lot to my team’s dynamic: I play small forward but can switch and play shooting guard or even power forward when needed. My mid-range shooting is the strongest part of my skill-set but I also possess a lot of defensive hustle and work to get every rebound I can. I have a strong work ethic and I try to keep a positive attitude, knowing it not only helps my game, but it helps my teammates when they are feeling frustrated. 

Most of all, I love basketball; it’s fast-paced, rewarding and every player has a role that is crucial for success.
