I am 16 and in 11th grade. I am growing up in a small country town in beautiful NE Oregon. The mountains and geography of this area is beautiful, but the winters are long. I worked hard to make it to the starting point guard position for my high school varsity basketball team last year. Basketball is my favorite sport and I play it year round any way I can. My PE teacher used to be my coach and he loves basketball. He lets me play basketball a lot during the school year so I can stay in shape and continue to work on my skills in the off season. He also set up a summer basketball league to help us stay in shape and improve our skills over the summer. I started a weight lifting regimen this past year and was able to put on quite a bit of muscle, though I am still pretty thin. I plan to continue to try to put on muscle as it really helped me this season. I was also able to improve my jump reach quite a bit over the off season and I will continue to work on that as well. I can now grab the rim easily and can dunk. I am easy going yet competitive, and am very team oriented. I am determined to be the hardest worker on the team. I get along with everyone and I listen to my coaches. I am always eager to learn more and improve my skills. I ask my coach after every practice what I need to work on. I sit with the JV team when they play so I can help them and cheer them on. I know that some of them could end up on my varsity team, so I am working on those relationships now.
My mom supports me and attends all the games and practices she can. She even got a key to the school gym and helps me text the high school basketball team to put together open gyms over the summer and off seasons. I strive to get good grades in school and I am employed throughout the year at our local farm supply store, Wallowa County Grain Growers. I volunteer in my community when I can and I help my single mother with chores around the house and yard and she teaches me as much life skills as she can. I am also a big brother to a sister who is 2 1/2 years younger than me. She plays volleyball. I go to all of her games that I can. My mom has taught me that being there supporting family is important.
My dream is to go to college and play basketball. I do not know what I want to study yet. But my mom is always having those discussions with me and is always coming to me with ideas she finds. She reminds me that there are a lot of options out there and thinks that I would be most interested in becoming a PE teacher/coach like my basketball coach. I am very close to my PE teacher and I look up to him. Especially how he cares about the kids in school and his desire to help them. He has helped a lot of students have a better life and get into college who did not have a good home life. I also think I might be interested in sports medicine or something similar. I hope to get more and better training for basketball in college. Basketball is my passion and I hope to pursue playing past high school. Recruiting is tough in such a small area. So my mom is going to send me to some camps to get some better experience and to hopefully meet some college coaches. We also hope to visit some campuses and meet coaches. I have a lot of questions about college basketball and what a person from a small area can do to get to play in college.
