My name is Gary Garcia and I’m a senior at Bowie High School in El Paso, Texas. My love for basketball was instilled in me at a very young age by both my parents. Basketball is a game of many lessons and one lesson that had a significant impact on my life was during an AAU tournament in San Antonio, Texas. Throughout the tournament, my playing time had significantly been cut by my coach. I immediately learned that no matter how long you’ve been playing the game or how long you’ve been part of a team, playing time is not given it’s earned.
For the last three years, I have worked on my physical and mental aspects of the game to become a better version of myself. This high school season has been a challenging one for our team, but it has taught me how to face adversity with a positive attitude. I feel that as the captain of my team the biggest role I've had is guiding and helping my teammates improve in their game. It’s helped me become more tenacious and fearless but most important it has given me the confidence to believe that I can play at the collegiate level. It would be an honor and privilege to have an opportunity to pursue my dream of playing basketball and continuing my education at your program.
