I wanted to play college basketball since I was in elementary school. This is a goal, not a dream, and I have worked to improve my skills almost every day since 4th grade when I started my first church league team. On every team, regardless of the position I'm playing, my coach tells me that I am a leader, the player who sets high standards for myself and motivates the whole team by my high level of dedication and energy from tip-off to the final buzzer. Through basketball, I have learned how to blend my competitive nature with respect and sportsmanship. This respect and sportsmanship are shown toward my team, my coach, opponents, officials, opposing fans, and my own skills, both in my successes and my shortcomings on the court.
I also have developed a passion for serving others. Before spring break of my freshman year, I was fortunate to be invited to travel to the Dominican Republic with our varsity basketball coach with ten other players for a mission trip. We served the people in the Dominican while playing basketball with locals and the Dominican Republic national team. Each day we talked with families, played with children in villages, and served meals to the local people of the DR. I fell in love with being able to share my faith and serving people in need. On our last day, we gave our shoes to the local team, many who played barefoot. This experience would not have been possible for me if I had not had basketball as a platform for mission work.
On and off the court, I strive to perform well. I have always been willing to work to be at the top, both athletically and academically. Regarding academics, I strive to keep my grades as close to a 4.0 as possible, but not just for the sake of the grade. I also work to understand the content. My goal is to get a solid college education while playing basketball as a student-athlete.
I would like to speak with coaches who feel they would benefit from having a dedicated, academically-solid, hard-working athlete as part of their program.
