Personal Statement

My name is Ben Smyth and I have been diving at a National level with the Boardworks team since I was six years old.  In those ten years, I have been to ten National Junior Championships, and either won medals or was a finalist (top ten) in every one of them except the first (I had just turned seven and was competing against eleven year olds).  I hold  52 Provincial Championship gold medals, and have competed and gotten medals internationally.  I have qualified for the Senior Nationals twice and come in the top ten on the platform.

My best board has always been the 10 metre platform, but last year I concentrated on the springboards.  I qualified for Junior Nationals and also Senior Nationals on all 3 boards -1 and 3 metre and the platform.  At Junior Nationals, I ended up getting two bronze medals on the 3 metre and 1 metre.  This is because I worked so hard to improve on these boards.  Anyone can score well, but my dedication to the sport, my perseverance, and my resilience sets me apart.  I can make the most out of any situation.  As I am only a Junior, I keep getting stronger and my lists keep getting better.  My club coach is one of the Olympic diving coaches in Canada and he pushes me to do my best.

I am a great teammate, always helping the younger kids and being a strong role model.  I take my academics seriously, and bring the focus that I learned in diving to my studies.  Because of my skills, strong character, and accomplishments, I have been awarded several times with B.C. Diving scholarship money, as well as the Irene MacDonald scholarship several years in a row.  The Pacific Institute of Sporting Excellence also awarded me with the "Rising Star" award for national athletes.  I have been on the Junior National Team and have gone to several High Performance Canadian Athlete Development camps.  If you accept me onto your team, you will not regret your decision.

Thank you for your consideration.
