My name is Jalen Apedoe and I am a 15 year old, grade 10 student at Joanne Cardinal-Schubert. I am a high-performance amateur competitive golfer with aspirations of achieving a university golf scholarship and eventually playing professionally on the PGA Tour.
I have been playing golf since I was three years old. I began competing in tournaments when I was five years old, and in my first Canadian Junior Golf Association (CJGA) tournament, I came third and won a bronze medal in the U9 division. In 2015, I competed in the IMG World Junior Golf Championship in San Diego, California, the Veritas World Junior in Pasadena, California and lastly, the US Kids World Junior Golf Championship in Pinehurst, North Carolina. It was an incredible experience, playing in those events with the best junior golfers in the world. I played some great golf, learned a lot, had fun, met some interesting people from around the world and experienced some amazing places and golf courses.
In 2016 I returned to compete in the US Kids World Junior Golf Championship in Pinehurst. I also competed in the local and sub-regional qualifiers for the Drive, Chip and Putt Championship in the United States, coming 2nd in putting and 3rd in driving and achieving a 1st place and two 5th place finishes overall. As a result of my success, I wanted to challenge myself and take my golf game to the next level so, when I was eight years old, I began playing up an age group, competing in the CJGA Linkster Tour U11 division. Once again, I achieved great success as the youngest player in the tournament fields.
At nine years old, I began playing the McLennan Ross Junior Tour, in the 2005 and older age division and was the youngest competitor on tour. In that first year, I qualified for the Tour Championship at the Wolf Creek Golf Resort and placed 18th. When I was 10 years old, I once again qualified for the McLennan Ross Tour Championship and placed T9 in the event. In addition, I won the Shaw Charity Classic Drive, Chip and Putt competition and had the privilege of following the final group, inside the ropes on Sunday and, being presented with a trophy on the 18th green by the winner of the Shaw Charity Classic, Wes Short Jr. In 2019, I also became the Lil Devil Junior Club Champion and competed in the Calgary Golf Association (CGA) City Junior tournament placing 2nd in the U12 division.
In 2020 I continued to have a great deal of success, winning my first McLennan Ross U-15 event in Medicine Hat, placing third in the U-13 division at the Alberta Provincial Championships and T-6th overall in the U-15 division of the McLennan Ross Tour Championship at Wolf Creek.
2021 was arguably my best season to date. I won the CGA City Junior, won 4 different McLennan Ross Tournaments held at different courses throughout southern Alberta, placed 1st at the Alberta U-13 Provincial Championships and placed 4th at McLennan Ross Tour Championship event. I finished in the top 8 of all 9 junior events I competed in during the season. Additionally, I was the runner-up in the 36 hole- Men's Club Championship at our home course - Serenity Golf Club, playing approximately 6700 yds from Silver tees (86-78=164). The 78 was the lowest round by any competitor over the two days.
2022 was a transition year, I grew a little and got a little stronger, but was still competing at age 13 versus U-19 and amateur men. This season was used to gain experience and measure my skills against these competitors. I found I was ready to compete at this level and played particularly well at the Alberta U-19 Championships R1-R2 was in a top 20 position, but had a tough 3rd day. Another highlight was the Alberta Men's Match Play where I shot a 76 during stroke play T-12 and advanced to match play against the 2020 Alberta Open Champion. The match was competitive early through 7 holes but after that his putting ability was the difference maker, and the match ended at the 13th hole. At the Alberta U-15 provincials, I played well but finished 4th.
2023 highlights include finishing 8th/48 competitors in a WAGR ranked event in Saskatchewan in May. In June, without the benefit of my new Titleist woods which we just ordered, I finished 23/78th competitors at Golf Canada's NextGen Western Championships. In July, at the Alberta Junior Boys U-19 Championship I posted a 3 round total of 224, finishing 16/102 competitors and qualified for Golf Canada's Canadian Junior Boys Championship. At the National Championship I missed the cut by 2 strokes (T82/157) but gained valuable experience competing against Canada's best juniors. My season finale was the Alberta U-15 Championship where I shot my tournament low 67, followed by a 74 to finish in 2nd place by 1 stroke.
I am setting ambitious goals for the upcoming 2024 season and I invite you to follow my progress.
