Golf became part of my life a little by accident. My parents bought a home in Florida about 4 years ago for their future retirement, and the home happens to be in a community with three golf courses. My dad always loved the game of golf but living where we do in Buffalo, NY and owning a concrete construction business, he always had limited time to play. My dad introduced me to golf the first year they bought the home – I haven’t stopped playing since. I remember coming home after our first outing and overhearing my dad tell my mom, “Wow, Shane’s a natural!” I knew then that this was the sport for me.
I am the youngest sibling in my family and had the opportunity to attend a private high school, St. Joseph Collegiate Institute. This school has taught me to be the best version of myself that I can be. I tried out for the golf team as a Freshman and made the team! Coach Bennett couldn’t believe I just started playing. He also said I was a “natural.” My sophomore year I received Most Improved Golfer and improved my score by 10 strokes! Junior year I received Most Valuable Player, leading the team to many victories.
Being an athlete and competing is a big part of my family. In my family, discipline, sacrifice, and dedication are distilled in me every day. Wrestling, one my family’s favorite sports, has been in my life since I was 5 years-old. I love individuality of the sport. It requires a lot of thinking on your feet, patience, and practice. I think that’s why I also love golf so much. In golf, you need to have similar thinking, discipline and a lot of self-control.
Golf has taught me to keep my feelings in “check.” You can’t think about what happened in the past – you have to always look ahead to the next hole. Golf is known as the “gentleman’s game,” where you lose with grace and win with dignity. I strive to live by those values, not only in golf, but in everyday life.
