Personal Statement

PERSONAL STATEMENT

Coach,

Thank you in advance for taking the time to review my profile. I look forward to discussing how I can be an asset to your school and your program.

Why I would be an asset to your program and your School?

  • First and most importantly I will be the consummate Student Athlete.  Education is my primary objective.  I have long-term career goals I want to achieve, it just so happens that I love golf and love to compete.   As a coach, you will be assured I will be on top of my academics and a team first member of your program.

  • My golf game is trending rapidly as my focus has switched from a dual sport athlete to golf.  I have achieved notable improvements in year over year results in the same events along with multiple scores under par in provincial and national events.

  • As I enter my last year of winter development and final year of junior golf prior to College I am excited how far I can take my game after just one year with my current swing coach.  I know I will enter college ready to contribute.

My Path to Collegiate Golf?

From high-end competitive hockey to Golf

Greatest Golf Attribute?

My Mental game & attitude, I never give up, never lose my composure.

PGA Tour Player my Game Resembles?

Matt Kuchar, very steady and even keel.

Canada's short golf season and long hockey season only enabled me to devote as little as 3 months a year to golf. Beginning in September 2016 I decided to play recreational hockey and begin winter golf development for the first time. The results this past summer in higher end events have fuelled my desire to continue to elevate my game as I am seeing how the focus I have committed to is translating to success.

I have spent my whole life in a team environment and know what it takes for teams to be successful. In my hockey career I was rewarded through the years as being appointed the team captaincy and alternate captaincy. I know this is something that will be an asset to my team in collegiate golf. I am a leader on and off the field of play and coaches can count on me to do whatever is required to ensure team success.

Academically, I am focussed on being the best I can be. I set goals not only to be on the school honor roll when I attended high school, but strived to attain the highest award available at our school, "The Golden Honor Roll". I am proud that I have attained an academic average of greater than 90 % in my first two years of high school. In my junior year I have taken advanced courses in the Math and Sciences as I have aspirations for a career in medicine.

As a person I strive to make a difference in people's lives. I was impacted at a very early age by losing 2 grandfathers to two very debilitating diseases. I lost them to ALS and Parkinson's. My grandfather loved golf and to this day I think of him whenever I am on the course. When I turned 16 I was able to volunteer in a chronic care facility and spend time with those who are older and suffering. I wanted meaningful volunteer hours once I graduated and spend 1 afternoon a week with those that need attention and companionship.

I look forward to discussing in greater detail on how I can be an asset to your team and program. I am anxious to undertake the work set out by my coach and continue my progression to be the best possible recruit I can be. In 12 months I have seen what 100 % commitment to the game I love can do and look forward to the challenges ahead of collegiate golf.

Events

  • Camp/Event
  • Graham Cooke Junior Invitational
  • 8/25/18 to 8/26/18
  • 74-76, T16 of 93 in 36 hole competition. This tournament confirmed the trend I have been on all year. Despite not playing my best my average to weak scores continue to be lower. I started off poorly both days, going 4 over par on the front 9 shooting 40. I came home in -2 and even both back 9's shooting 34 & 36. This is my single best attribute, I never quit regardless of the kind of day I am having. When I am playing well my scores continue to go lower. This is my 2nd last event before year end.
  • Camp/Event
  • Williamson Cup
  • 8/14/18 to 8/14/18
  • 78-80 in 36 hole competition versus a chosen elite field. Picked as 1 of 4 golfers representing Province of Quebec versus other state golf associations. Fought hard despite continuing to not feel I am playing at my best. I did not quit, especially in 2nd round when I was +7 after 7 holes. Played remaining 11 holes in +1.
  • Camp/Event
  • Canadian Junior Boys Championship
  • 7/30/18 to 8/02/18
  • 78-76, MC. Disappointed in not making cut. I felt just a little off both days and definitely did not play my best. In my first national event I realized that I am capable of competing and challenging the country's best even though my results this week show otherwise.
  • Camp/Event
  • Quebec U19 Provincial Championship
  • 7/09/18 to 7/12/18
  • 71-76-79-70, Finished 15/125. Qualified to play in Canada's National Junior Championship for first time. First time I also had 2 under par rounds in same tournament. First 2 rounds of 71-76 were very satisfying. I did get poor end of draw with heavy winds on day 1 in morning while afternoon draw saw much calmer winds. Played 2nd round in afternoon draw with winds and gusts of in excess of 30 MPH. I had a very disappointing 3rd round but happy to close out championship with one of the lower scores in round 4. Very encouraged on progression as my results are improving exponentially from same event/same fields year over year.
  • Camp/Event
  • Quebec Optimist Classic
  • 6/09/18 to 6/09/18
  • 73-80 in 36 hole competition. Despite shooting 73 in 1st round it felt a lot better and should of been under par. 2nd round was disappointing and among worst rounds I played in weeks. Finished 21/98.
  • Camp/Event
  • CN Future Links Quebec
  • 6/08/18 to 6/10/18
  • 80-78-74 in another 54 hole Invitational for top golfers in Quebec & many from Ontario province. This is considered one of Canada's strongest & premiere tournaments. Struck the ball well but my putting was off which is usually a strength. Encouraged because I felt I played quite poorly but finished strong on final day.
  • Camp/Event
  • CN Future Links Ontario
  • 5/25/18 to 5/27/18
  • 79-79-67 in 54 hole Invitational for top golfers in Ontario & Quebec province. This is considered one of Canada's strongest & premiere tournaments. Played under very difficult conditions on a very difficult set-up. Finished 12/90 golfers setting the Tournament low round of 67 on final day. Defeated 2017 Ontario U19 champion (Tristan Renaud) & 2017 Ontario Men's Amateur (Sudarshan Yellamaraju) This field had many existing DI players along with many D1 commits. After the last few competitive rounds where I was not getting the results from my play in individual rounds, it came together during the final round and look forward to the next major event. https://golfcanada.bluegolf.com/bluegolf/rcga18/event/rcga18230/contest/5/leaderboard.htm
  • Camp/Event
  • Ontario Junior Classic
  • 5/19/18 to 5/21/18
  • 79-81-79 vs one of the strongest fields in Canada. Played considerably better than scores indicate. Finished 36/60. Many players are D1 commits and internationally ranked juniors.
  • Camp/Event
  • CJGA Quebec Junior Open (Invitational)
  • 5/05/18 to 5/06/18
  • 72-77 in 36 hole Invitational for top golfers in Quebec province. Held 1st round lead in field of 77 players. Happy with progression, finished 4/77 vs a finish of 29/85 with scores of 79-81 in 2017 at same event, similar field at same golf club.
  • Camp/Event
  • AJGA Osprey Point Preview
  • 4/07/18 to 4/08/18
  • 78-73 in 36 hole event. 1st event in 3 1/2 months after not playing outdoors. Felt sharper as tournament progressed. Finished 20/57.
  • Camp/Event
  • HJGT - South Florida Kickoff
  • 12/30/17 to 12/31/17
  • 83-80 in 36 hole event. 1st event in 4 months after not playing outdoors. Played considerably better than score indicates. Rust from long layoff in some trying Florida conditions evident during both rounds. Finished 7/35.
  • Camp/Event
  • Quebec U19 Provincial Match Play Championship
  • 8/21/17 to 8/23/17
  • Top Jr's in province of Quebec. Defeated 6th seed in QF. Lost on 19 hole in SF to the 2nd ranked Jr golfer in Quebec. Played 4 matches
  • Camp/Event
