Some of my best memories growing up revolve around the game of hockey. As early as I can remember I was either watching hockey with my family, had a stick in my hand, or skates on my feet. As soon as I could walk I started to skate. Growing up in a hockey family allowed me to develop my passion for sports at a young age while developing leadership skills from a team game.
I first started playing hockey at the age of three and it was the best decision my parents made to ensure I learned teamsmanship, time management, perseverance and that you get out what you put in. I have played AAA hockey throughout minor hockey for various coaches and have learned from each of them. I have also played elite baseball for the last four years and as a two sport athlete I have been able to combine my passion for both sports while many others have chosen to abandon one sport for the other. My family has always supported me to continue playing both sports as they both teach so many life long skills.
As a hockey player I possess a high hockey IQ and great vision of the ice. This sets up opportunities in all three zones on the ice and places me in the right spot to create and prevent opportunities from occurring. My skating, agility and edgework have allowed me to jump in a rush or close a gap. Despite being a smaller player growing up I still demonstrated a strong physical presence. In the defensive zone, there have often been comments about my complete level in the corners and the ability to force opposing players to make poor decisions thus allowing me to separate the man from the puck or giving my team the opportunity to retake control. Offensively, my accurate shot allows pucks from the point to find their way to the net through traffic. My skills, abilities and desire are demonstrated in my attached video clips.
Throughout my time playing I have made many friends, learned many lessons, and have had the opportunity to experience things others my age have not because of hockey and baseball. Being a competitive person, it has always been a goal for me to play at the highest level. I have worked hard on ice and diamond and now realise I want to use my passion to go to the next level in sport and education. I also understand the need to have an education will allow me to be successful as I transition from school to work life. I believe an American post secondary school would be the best place to pursue my passion as it would allow me to excel in not only athletics but academics as well.
