Good day,
My name is Nicholas McGowan and I am 17 years old. My graduation year is 2020. I am a 2002. I live in Ontario, Canada. I am excited to have an opportunity to write about my academic goals and my passion for hockey as a goalie for a chance to pursue my path in an American college or university with a scholarship in the field of psychology, with a specialization in sport psychology.
I chose sport psychology because I enjoy helping teammates, friends and family when they have challenges. I believe I would be good at helping athletes to overcome obstacles. I have learned from experience that an athlete's performance depends heavily on their mental preparation. I myself went to consult a sports psychologist last summer to help me overcome an unexpected challenge. I was impressed by the range of technicality and support they had to offer and I could see myself working in that environment. I am currently in my last year of high school and I am taking the mandatory general courses at this time in order to take psychology in later studies and have a 89% average in all university level courses.
I am a good student, I have good study habits. I am currently attending E.L Crossley in Pelham, Ontario while I am billeting for the Pelham Panthers. Once I get back home I will be attending Bayside Secondary School in Trenton, Ontario. Although throughout all my years of school I always attended a Full French school. My first two years of high school were in English and I was on the honor roll for both years. This makes me fluent in speaking both languages, as well as in reading, and writing.
I enjoy sports in general and my passion is ice hockey. My teammates are mostly important to me and I believe I am also a great teammate. I have been a goaltender since I am 5 years old. I have always played at the highest level, having played 6 years at the AAA level. This year at 17 I am playing for the Pelham Panthers Jr. B hockey club in the (GOJHL) with 4 practices a week and 2 games on the weekends which lots of ice time is critical for development. This league was ranked #8 in all of North America for Junior hockey by "The Hockey Writers".
I have volunteered 64 hours mostly helping with youth goalie hockey camps, working with my mentor Kory Cooper, goaltender coach for the AHL Belleville Senators. I have also volunteered at a kids camp on the military base close to us during last March break, which gave me the opportunity to have my first employment during summer of 2018 as a camp leader.
I would be happy to answer any of your questions, thank you for taking the time to read my statement.
Nicholas McGowan
