I am a highly motivated hockey player and I have played the game since I was 4 years old. I listen to my coaches and I am a team player. I am always working to get better. Last year was my break-out year as my growth finally caught up with my teammates and competitors. I am committed to weight lifting, which has improved my game. I will be skating again with the Western Mass Vipers this fall, now with the U18 team. My High School Senior season will begin in November.
Academically, I have struggled. I have dyslexia and ADHD. I find ways to cope with it, but sitting in school all day, reading and listening to lectures isn't the way I learn best. I am hoping to find a collegiate program where I can learn in other ways, including hands-on, wilderness based or experiential learning. Junior hockey might be a good fit. It will allow me to develop my game and get more committed to academics. It will also focus me on strength training, nutrition and skill development.
ADHD may in fact help me be a better hockey player. When I focus I am hyper focused. It allows me to understand where the play is going and where other players are on the ice. It can help me be in the right place at the right time.
So I am not your typical high school hockey player competing on grades and academic achievements. I am a solid, motivated hockey player who wants to play after high school at the highest level possible.
