Personal Statement
Hello, I'm Rethabile Alex Breeding but everyone calls me Alex. I was born in southern Africa, in a small country called Lesotho. I didn't have good childhood like other people do. I moved to Bellingham WA in 2010 whenI was 7. I got adopted by my Great Aunt and Uncle, Selloane and Michael Breeding. I was a very hyper kid growing up and I didn't know what to do with all the energy when I first moved here. We found out I had ADHD, so that made school and learning things very hard for me. My dad Mike tried his best to see why I couldn't learn like others do. In 2017 we found out I was dyslexic, which made middle school very hard for me so I kinda gave up on learning. Then in 2018 my dad found a tutor for me even though I had like 5 growing up. This tutor was different. She understood my reading disability and with her help, Freshman year was a bigger success than it would have been without her. I still have to work harder than most kids to read, but at least I now have the tools I need to be successful.
In 2010, when I started playing sports, I felt like nothing else mattered except the games. In 2012 I discovered Lacrosse, a sport that I can run around without having to stop every down like football. In Lacrosse you just play till the last whistle. Then I found Basketball, then Baseball, and at some point I did Gymnastics. I can't go a season with out playing a sport because I can't sleep at night if I don't use all my energy.
Then high school came. It was easy for me to keep up with my grades because of the help of my tutor and awesome teachers. I was happy about that. Then one night I had a dream, more like a voice in my head telling me that I have a story to tell. And everyday after that dream, I looked back at my life and told myself, "There is no way that I moved here just to have normal life again, Mike and Selloane were sent by God to save me, and give me a chance that most kids in Africa will never have. So I get up everyday and I go do it for them."
My heart was meant for Lacrosse. My mom and dad cannot pay for college no matter what level I go, D1 or lower level, so it's got to be a Lacrosse scholarship. I told my biological mom, who is still alive in Lesotho, that I'm not going to let anything stop me from being the best. I have a dream, and the only way it can be achieved is through hard work and perseverance, and if I have to push my body to the limit... I WILL!
