My interest in rowing dates back to middle school, where I randomly joined a rowing camp near my grandmother’s house in Sonora, CA. I stayed with her over the summer, and she wanted me to try something new. The first time I rowed, I knew I wanted to continue the sport and while basketball was a sport I played my whole life, I knew I had found a new love.
When I started high school last year, I made sure I spoke to the rowing coach in the fall and let him know my intention of rowing in the spring. We kept in touch; I joined in when I could in the spring and recruited heavily to ensure my first year was a hit. After my first season, it seemed only logical that I pursue a sports career in rowing through high school and beyond.
For my school, since our rowing location is way off campus, recruitment is hard. Kids mostly join sports that they see daily on campus. I have worked for the last two years to recruit football and basketball athletes to give us the strongest most athletic boats. I have also helped fundraise and introduce rowing to incoming students to help build the program.
Of course, my plans following completion of high school are to row for my college. I want to row for a competitive school and know that I will be an asset to any school. I am a good candidate for any team because I row with my heart; I don’t complain, and I work hard in everything I do. For basketball I have won Defensive Player of the year two years in a row as well as coaches award. I believe that shows that I work hard and that coaches see my work ethic. I know my current coach Michael Verdone can also attest to my hard work and dedication to the sport.
Thanks for your consideration.
