First rowing memory: a skinny 150lbs 8th grader, showing up for a 1K middle school erg sprint. The problem was they had cancelled that event for that year. They offered me to race a 2K with the Varsity Lightweights. I had never rowed a 2K, but might as well go for it. Finished with a 7:17. Pacing? What is pacing? It did hurt a lot but it was totally worth it.
I take all Honors and AP classes and I am in advanced Math. Next year (Junior) I will be taking Linear Algebra, Multivariable Calculus, AP Physics C, AP English Literature and AP Statistics. My weighted GPA is 4.7
I owe a lot to rowing. It has helped me mature and it has taught me to be accountable to my teammates, my coach and most importantly to myself. I have many people to thank for the opportunity I have been given to row: my parents, my coaches, my teammates and the team parents who cook and keep us fed during regattas. I started rowing starboard my freshman season, but this season my coach asked me to row port. I was really apprehensive to switch, but I am really thankful my coach pushed me to race on both sides. Plus now I have matching calluses on both hands! It's awesome to row port in our 1V 8+ and starboard with my 2- partner.
Rowing has taught me to be physically and mentally strong, and to push beyond limits that once seemed beyond reach. I love the competition on the water and on the erg; it's about pushing myself every day beyond physical and mental limits that seem out of reach. Every day at practice it's about doing the small things right and about doing the right things when no one is watching. However, what I value the most is my Atlanta Juniors teammates. I am excited about our road ahead together. I hope that after high school, I can continue rowing in college. I know that it will demand a lot more from me, but I will be ready to tackle that challenge head on, just like I did with that 1K in middle school.
