Personal Statement
I may be small, but my voice most certainly is not! Coxing is in my blood. My older sister is a coxswain and my entire family rows. I started rowing in the summer of 7th grade but quickly switched gears when my coach was in need of a coxswain. Feeling the boat move and watching the rowers respond to my voice - and my voice alone - was what really roped me into the sport. I know how to lead, and that is the opportunity I'm looking for in a college. Throughout my coxing career, I have had the experience of being coached by over 23 coaches! If I have learned anything over that period of time, it is that I am adaptable, coachable yet independent when necessary. I have learned from several experienced athletes and coaches who taught me a variety of different techniques when it comes to rowing. I have been able to learn from them and advance my knowledge of the sport. My goal for coxing is to be able to define the perfect stroke and most importantly call it! Being a part of a team is extremely important to me - the swing is the thing and I am constantly calling for it.
Coxing is not my entire life. I take a lot of pleasure in extracurricular activities such as the Debate Team, Model UN, Engineering Club, the school newspaper, and Amnesty International. I also believe it is important to give back to the community, which is why I am an active member of Habitat for Humanity as well as being a Peer Minister at my school. My interests may be diverse, but the central theme is leadership - which is what attracts me to coxing. I am a strong believer of living in the moment - which is a big part of my coxing strategies. When it comes to hard work, I look ahead, demand the set, find the line, and execute!
