Effort. Ever since I could walk and talk this has been a word that I have heard in my life. At first, I thought it just meant to run hard. After 8 years of playing year-round multiple sports, having an emphasis placed on academics and watching my parents and grandparents work, play and raise their families, I learned that effort is so much more. I come from a family where my father and grandfathers all played college sports. One set of grandparents fled a revolution with only the clothes on their back. One great grandparent walked for over 1 year to return home to his family. Effort is so much more than running hard.
Effort is getting up and being on time. It is finishing the assignment or the drill to the best of our ability when it’s hot or it’s late without taking a shortcut. It’s being the first one to congratulate or pick up a teammate. Effort tells you to get it right before you take off your boots or turn off the lights. Effort is every step of the process that puts a team and the individual in the best position to have success. The effort I have put forth in all my activities along with the effort of the people who have supported me have led me to know that I want to play soccer at the next level.
I want to be a person who gives effort on the field, in the classroom and with the people in my life. We will all have successes and failures, but the effort we give allows us to continue the journey, enjoying the wins and learning from the times things don’t go our way. I want not only win, but enjoy the journey, and the people I share those experiences with, forming relationships that hopefully last a lifetime.
