Personal Statement

I started getting into soccer when my parents introduced it to me at a young age.  Ever since then, I have grown to love the sport and if my parents never encouraged me to play soccer, I probably wouldn't be pursuing soccer now. I have had an up down soccer career so far, but one of my high points is when I was named Freshman Captain and MVP for my High School. I really feel that I have grown as a soccer player more in my Sophomore year when I didn't play as much, but I really started to study the game more so I can improve everything I can about it.

I was really appreciative of being a part of a great program from my High School soccer and both years I have played for them have been both amazing and challenging. I have learned the value of being a good teammate and learning that teamwork is very important when playing such a competitive game. My leadership skills have also grown since my Freshman year.  I now know how to lead a team and know how to analyze game situations better.

When playing for my travel teams, the result have not always been positive and I haven't won many big tournaments. But through all of that adversity, I have learned to deal with it and play the best that I can.

In my future, I am looking for a program that will be a good fit for me. I hope that I find a college where I can play soccer and also study what I want to be after my soccer career is over.  As a soccer player, I know that I have what it takes to be a good teammate and I know the value of hard work.  I believe I would be a good fit to join your program.

  • Roadrunners SC Player Evaluation Winter 2014/2015 Player: Colin Whitson Coach: Taylor Waspi Date: April 28, 2015 Attacking Comments: -Colin really had a tremendous winter season and made great progress in every aspect of his game. He continued to improve a lot with his overall attacking game and is becoming a very dangerous attacking player. -One area I wanted him to work on was his shot preparation touch. His first touch is getting much better but I want him to continue to focus on this to speed up his two-touch shot around the box. -Another area I wanted him to work on was his ability to shoot across his body. He does a great job with this and can release a great driven shot. One area that I want him to focus on this spring is beating players inside more at diagonals and hitting bent balls around the keeper back post. -Finally, I wanted him to really focus on his use of combination play to get behind defenders. He has made great progress with this but I want him to really focus on this aspect of his game more this spring and increase his ability to play one/two-touch combos. At times, Colin dribbles too much and loses possession. I want him to work on dribbling (drawing defenders towards him) and then quickly playing a combo pass to break down those defenders and then receive it again to start dribbling again. -This spring, I also want Colin to better recognize when to play simple to just keep possession/rotate ball and when to take more chances in the attack. Defensive Comments: -Colin’s overall defensive game has shown great progress this winter. He has continued to have a great work ethic and really makes it difficult for the other teams to play out of the back. As a defender myself, I would hate to play against Colin because he always provides a sense of pressure, which is great to see. I want him to continue to work on arriving balanced though when closing down defenders in order to make it more difficult for them to dribble out of the back. -Colin has also made great improvement with his ability to close off passing lanes into the midfield. When defenders are rotating the ball, I want him to focus on his other forward’s run (ball defenders) and his ability to make diagonal (cover) runs into the midfield. He has also made great progress with his ability to match up on restarts and win defensive headers but I want him to focus on constantly having a body on players. -His main defensive focus this spring season should be arriving balanced more when playing 1vs1 defense. Goals: -My first goal for Colin this winter was to improve his ability to peek over his shoulders to understand the space around him better. He has made good progress with this but I want this to be another main focus of his this spring. I want him to work on coming side-on more when coming into space to better recognize whether he should lay it off/make an attacking run or to turn and attack on the dribble. -My second goal for Colin this winter was to improve his combination play. He has also made progress with this but I want this to remain as a goal of his this spring. I want him to work on constantly continuing his runs and getting outside his defender’s shoulders. -My third goal for him this winter was to improve the timing of his runs into the box. He is getting better with this and it has really made a positive impact on his overall attacking game. I want him to continue working on his finishing attacking headers in his free time. -My new goal for Colin this spring is to improve the timing of his runs into windows as we rotate the ball across channels. -Another new goal I have for him this spring is to really dominate the air on corners/restarts. Overall Comments: -Colin really had a great winter season and made great strides with his overall game. His training habits have continued to improve and he really pushes himself to get better at training. Keep up the great work! Roadrunners SC Player Evaluation Fall 2014 Player: Colin Whitson Coach: Taylor Waspi Date: December 23, 2014 Attacking Comments: • Colin’s overall attacking ability has improved greatly this year. He has great confidence when taking players on one vs. one and finishing on the keeper with a placement shot. • Colin does a great job at taking shots from distance and his accuracy is improving. He has progressed a lot in this area, and is doing much better at shooting at shooting from effective angles. I want him to continue working on his shot preparation touch in order to increase his speed when shooting two touch. • Colin has also shown improvements in his ability to take shots across his body when shooting off the dribble. I want him to work on dribbling at angles more and shooting across the goal more in order to use the keeper’s momentum against them. • Colin has improved at using combination play. He is also an extremely athletic player who can use his athleticism (overall speed and quickness) to beat defenders. I would like to see Colin use a blend of both combination play and physical speed in order to make him a more complex and dangerous player. Defensive Comments: • Colin does a great job of putting pressure on defenders to create offensive opportunities for himself. Colin’s overall work ethic and desire to win the ball are excellent and a great asset to our team. • I would like to see him do a better job of using his blocking foot when running with defenders in order to cut off their ability to make passes. • I would also like to see Colin improve his communication with the midfielders, as well as, recognize when he should sit back in the midfield and close off passing lanes inside the field. • Colin has a great vertical jump and does a great job of winning defensive headers. I would like for him to begin matching up with stronger players from the opposing team on corners and overloads when available. Goals: • The first goal I have for Colin is to work on peeking over his shoulder more and constantly taking mental pictures behind him. This will really improve his understanding and the speed of his decision making when he should turn to run at defenders or lay balls off quickly to create combination play. • My second goal for Colin this next season is to improve his ability to break players down more through combination play. • Lastly, I would like Colin to work on both the timing of his runs and using body faints (to pull defenders off balance) to get across his defender quicker and win more opportunities in front of goal. Overall Comments: • Overall, Colin has seen great improvement in his overall play this season. At a certain point in the fall season, I saw Colin become more much serious and driven in training, improving his training habits tremendously. As a result, I noticed a huge improvement in his overall ability, especially in games. I have enjoyed working with Colin and look forward to working with him again this season. I believe that if Colin continues to work hard, he will be an extremely dangerous player come spring.

  • Dear Colin, We hope you are well and in good spirits following our One Day Identification Camp. Thank you for attending and putting forth a fantastic effort considering the weather conditions. Elmhurst College only does things first class so we trust you saw this from our staff and players. As promised, your evaluation is below for your review. You showed great quickness and explosiveness when running with the ball. Your speed is a fantastic quality and you have to make sure you play to your strengths with that. Your 1v1 attacking ability created many goal scoring opportunities for your team and is dangerous for defenders. We know you are still young but you fit in with many of the 2018 grads, so that was very impressive. Keep working you playing simple and making the correct decisions. Again, thank you for attending the Elmhurst College ID Camp. We wish you the best of luck moving forward now and in the future. All the best, Coach Jaskolski
