Personal Statement
Hi, I’m Drew Matune and I am entering my senior year this fall. I have been playing keeper since I was 7 years old. It is the only position I have ever wanted to play. I enjoy being the quarterback of the defense, helping to place my teammates in situations where they can be most effective. Positive communication is important to me and feel it is one of my strengths. The vantage point of my position allows me to see the entire field; to be the eyes of our defense. Their success is my success, our team’s success.
The possibility of playing keeper at the collegiate level has become an important focus while improving my skill level during the last few years. I have been fortunate to play against some of the best club and high school players/teams in the Chicago area. This competition has inspired me to not only become a better player, but also come to know that playing in college is a realistic goal.
Above my soccer aspirations is my intent to earn a business degree. My family has instilled in me the necessity of earning a degree and being a life-long learner, as my parents have earned graduate degrees. The other intangible that has been passed onto me by my family is coachability and being like another coach on the field. My grandfather played college basketball and my father was a national champion gymnast at Purdue University. Both were successful high school head varsity coaches in the Chicago area and have taught me a great deal about preparation, mental toughness, practicing as hard as one can to simulate game like conditions and continuously being a student of the game.
I would like to play keeper in college because I know my very best skill level is yet to come. I am looking for a program with a proven record of player development and notable academics to attain both my soccer and educational goals.
