Personal Statement

To all Coaches, I know this might be a long one but it truly shows who I am and why I’m possibly a good candidate for your team. My name is Samuel William McConnell. I’m from a small town in Southern Indiana by the name of Newburgh. We are about 10 minutes away from Evansville. I play for Castle High School and Indiana Fire. I’ve always kind of held off on a Personal Statement on here just because I never really knew what to say or how to say it. I’ve had NCSA for around 2 or 3 years now and have never put in a meaningful statement. The last couple of months have been very eventful in some positive and negative ways dealing with not only soccer, but personal life too which are shaping me into a better person. I’m not meaning to make this statement super long, but I’ve found what I truly want to write about. About 2 to 3 months ago I was recruited by the Indiana Fire Academy located in Indianapolis. I had fully committed without a doubt because obviously it had always been a dream. I stayed committed for about a month and a half. This was all during the summer time and as summer had gone on I truly started to find some of my real friends and become closer with a lot of people including my family. I have also loved my High School team and head coach. Right before the deadline was to make my decision to play for the Academy Team I really started to think about if this what I wanted. My answer was honestly no. I wouldn’t have a separate life besides soccer. Now, I’m not saying that’s not what I want eventually, but at least not at this age. I was supposed to move away from my family for an entire year and move in with a different family. I would’ve woken up, do 7 to 8 hours of online school, go to practice, come home and probably do some homework and then go to bed and do the exact same thing the next day. My summer had been great and I still trained with my High School team and it was great. I knew in my heart that I couldn’t leave this all behind. I knew that if I was truly a good enough player to play at the next level then the right college would still find me with or without Academy. I’ve always been up to the challenge to play at the next level. I started in the state game my freshman year for my High School team. I’m an extremely humble and down to earth person, but I always play with a chip on my shoulder. I  consider myself a great leader. I was nominated captain by my teammates as a Junior on my High School team. I know how to get on a teammates ass when he needs it but build him back up at the same time. I am very competitive and aggressive but a smart player. I am always up for the challenge - whether that’s a 50/50 ball in the air or on the ground or man marking the best player on the opposing team. I am very patient and controlled on the ball whether I’m in the back or in the midfield. I play 2 different positions for my High School team. Attacking Mid and Center Back. I’m going to do whatever needs to be done for my team and to get the win. I believe I am a very talented player and have a lot of potential. All I can say is  I’m ready to use all of it at the next level wherever that may possibly be.
