If there is anything that I have learned from being a student-athlete with dyslexia, it is that all things are possible if you have a winning attitude. Playing competitive soccer has given me an opportunity to showcase my talents outside the classroom. It has also helped me to develop a strong work ethic and good sportsmanship. However, having dyslexia has taught me things I might not have learned from being an athlete; like how to think outside of the box, not to be afraid of failure, and that I can overcome any challenges I’m faced with on and off the field.
This winning mentality was beneficial for me in the 2018-19 season. As the new player on the school soccer team, I had to train harder and longer hours to earn the respect of my teammates and coach. I also needed to have the grades to stay on the team. What you can’t find on my transcript is the time I spent on the field and attending tutorials to keep up with school and athletics. Not only was I given the opportunity to play as defending starter, I was also awarded Most Improved Player and ranked 85th-percentile in the State of Texas on my 8th grade assessments. As a rising freshman with a college bound attitude, I believe that I have the ambition, skill set and discipline to play at the college level for your team.
