Club Information

  • Seasons of Club Experience
  • 1 season
  • 2024 Seattle United (NW B09 Blue)
  • Technical Ability / Ball Skills Exceptional technical ability and ball skills. Constantly beats players on the dribble, great first touch, takes his first touch away from pressure, turns away from pressure, and can strike a ball with great technique. Griffin can dribble/pass/shoot (including volleys) with both feet and almost always finds a way out of pressure (even when double and triple-teamed). Very creative and crafty with the ball at his feet. Passes with the correct pace and ball placement (away from the defender). Great at playing through balls in behind the defense on the ground (needs to improve at them in the air). Tactical Awareness / Positional Understanding Exceptional tactical awareness and positional understanding. Griffin has made tremendous strides in these areas since the beginning of the season. He has learned to get the ball off his foot quicker (i.e. to keep the ball moving and dribble less when it's not necessary) but still dribbles too much at times. Has improved dribbling to look for a pass in the first two-thirds of the field instead of dribbling just to dribble. Creates several opportunities for both himself and teammates every game. Excellent vision. Great at anticipating what teammate's/opponent's next move is. Great at completing the first pass after we regain possession of the ball. Coachability Extremely coachable. Always listens when I talk to him and the team, is receptive to feedback, has a growth mindset, is very self-aware, never talks back, constantly asks questions, excellent teammate, says "thank you coach" after every single training/game, adaptable, and rarely makes the same mistake twice. Areas they do well Offense: knows where to be, great at checking into gaps to receive the ball, head checks before he receives the ball (so he knows where the pressure is coming from, who/where the open guy is, and where to go with the ball), uses his body to protect the ball well, gets right back up after getting knocked down, understands when to attack with pace and when to slow down our attack to maintain possession, good at switching the point of attack when we don't have the numbers advantage, exceptional vision, good through ball ability, has a great shot and a knack for goal, and knows when to shoot vs. pass in the final third. Defense: head checks on defense so he knows where to be and who/when to press, great tackler, physical, never stops working, great at winning the ball back after we lose it, and tracks back to help defenders when we're defending (has improved a lot in this aspect since the beginning of the season). Areas to improve on 1. Can dribble into pressure unnecessarily at times (has improved in this area already). Griffin is great at dribbling and taking defenders on, but needs to release the ball quicker in order to move up to higher teams. 2. Develop a more consistent, straight/driven long ball with backspin in behind the defense with dominant foot (also work on this with both feet). 3. Develop more power with weak foot. The best way to improve this and '2' is to master the correct technique and practice thousands of repetitions. I'm more than happy to share how I developed technique, power, and accuracy for long-balls and shots with both feet. 4. Communicate more on defense (i.e. telling a teammate to provide ball-pressure, telling a teammate out of position where to go, passing opposing attackers onto other teammates, directing the front three to close gaps so they can't get split). 5. More specific communication on offense (has improved in this area already). 6. Disguising passes more often. This is where your body shape and eyes are facing one way, and then you pass the other way. This makes it much harder for the defense to anticipate where the ball is going. Has shown the ability to disguise passes, but doing this more consistently is extremely useful in breaking opponents' press and lines. 7. Striking the corners of the goal on shots more consistently. Griffin usually does a great job of picking out his spot. But there are times when he hits his shot at the goalie or misses the frame because he chooses power over accuracy or lacks technique. 8. Develop more power/accuracy when heading the ball. Be able to pass to teammates with a header from GK punts and opponents through balls. Be able to clear the ball with a header from an opponent's set-pieces, crosses, throw-ins, etc. by either heading the ball diagonally out of the box or by flicking the ball backward over everyone (flicking is mainly for crosses close to the endline when we cannot get high enough to make direct contact with our forehead). 9. Make 3rd man runs more often. This is an anticipatory run to either help a teammate under pressure or switch the point of attack. Let's say our 6 passes the ball to our 9: a 3rd man run would be if Griffin runs toward the 9 when the pass is on the way so the 9 can make a one-touch pass to Griffin who can then make a one-touch through ball, pass out wide to switch the point of attack, or drive if he has space to dribble. Griffin does a good job of this already, but doing this consistently will take his game to another level. 10. One-touch finishing on crosses. Has shown the ability to score off a cross, but misses the target oftentimes. 11. More power/accuracy/bend crossing the ball with weak foot. Additional Comments: I love coaching Griffin and he's an absolute joy to have on the team. He's a tremendous kid, an amazing teammate, and a fantastic player who is crucial to our team's success. Griffin is the ultimate competitor and has a true passion for the game that anyone who watches him play can easily see.
