2021 Highlights #2
2021 HighlightsI have played club soccer longer than I have been able to speak English. I was born in a village in Ethiopia in 2004. My mom died of malaria when I was still a baby. My dad was a farmer and had trouble growing enough food to feed us all by himself. When I was four he took me to an orphanage hoping I'd have a better chance there. A month before I turned six I was adopted and moved to Green Bay, Wisconsin. I started school right away but I was way behind. My parents saw that I was athletic so they signed me up for winter soccer at a local club and I have stayed with it.
Ever since I came to America all I wanted to do was fit in with the other kids. Even when I couldn't speak the new language or was working to catch up in school soccer was a way I could interact as an equal. I was lucky to get some coaches who worked with me and pushed me to be the best I could.
My parents have always taught me education is the number one priority. I know my birth father would agree. Now that I am caught up in school I think I can do both. I want to go to college to get a degree, maybe to be a personal trainer or physician assistant, but I also want to play soccer. I think I'm doing pretty well in high school and I want to continue.
Soccer was my way to fit in. Now I want it to help me stand out.
