My goal is to attend a university that will both push me academically as well as athletically. I have been swimming competitively for about 7 years and do not intend to stop. Something I love about swimming is the competition. Few things are more satisfying than the feeling of pushing ahead of the pack, and taking the most pain for the greatest reward. Even if I lose, I like the climb back, training hard so I can win or place better next time.
My favorite events are 200s, because they are like marathons condensed into just a few minutes. Swimmers don’t need to go out at top speed, because they know there is so much more race to complete. I love how placing can change in a 200 race so much, the swimmers that go out the fastest do not always win, there’s always a chance of a movie-esque comeback.
The person who got me into swimming and inspired me to swim fast was my mom. As long as I can remember, she always taught me to work the hardest and to be the best, traits that I see in myself now. Even as an 8 year old who had just learned to swim, I vividly remember thinking to myself, “If mom can be strong then I can be strong!” and then pushing myself to be faster. This mentality brought me relative success, until eventually it grew into my own.
