Personal Statement

Hi, My name is Saxon Day.  Please see my recent match play videos.  I have played varsity tennis since 9th grade, first playing #2 Doubles and then playing #1 Doubles as a sophomore and junior. I have led my team with an overall record of 52 wins and 12 losses. I was awarded Freshman of the Year, team MVP as a Sophomore, and team MVP as a Junior. As a Senior, I was elected Captain and hope to lead my team to the finals of both the California High School Tennis Classic, for the 2nd consecutive year, and the Central Coast Section tournament, for the 4th consecutive year.

Some background about me: At the age of 12, after playing for a top-10 national ranked travel baseball (USSSA) for 2 years, I played tennis for the very first time at a family get-together. That experience was so fantastic, I gave up baseball a few months later to allow more time for tennis. After a year of practicing with my dad and friends, I began working with my coach, Francisco Ruiz, and started playing USTA juniors. I won my first tournament soon after joining USTA-juniors and in the 3 years which I competed in juniors tournaments, I have won a total of 8 of my 13 championship-round appearances.  By the time I was 14, I was a 2-star player.

In High School, I also played varsity football for both my Sophomore and Junior years as a 235 lb starting offensive guard and defensive tackle. I received the recognition of All League First Team . Since I played doubles throughout HS, speed and endurance were never a problem. My Junior year, I finished the tennis season with a record of 17-4 playing #1 Doubles. Because of football, I had not played juniors tournaments since my freshman year and I decided if I wanted to play college level tennis, two things had to happen. First, I needed to focus solely on tennis and give up football for my Senior year. Second, I needed to cut significant weight in order to improve my endurance and quickness on the court. This past summer, under care of a doctor, with a low calorie diet and a lot of intense training and exercise, I lost 50lbs. As of 8/22, I achieved my original goal weight of 185 lbs. As of October 1st, I am down to 177, I can run a 05:45 mile and can do 100 push-ups without pause.  I chose to do this because I am very serious about playing competitive college tennis; and, to be successful, I need to be at a weight compatible with the challenging physical demands of serious competition.

With respect to where I would like to play, having been born in Connecticut, moved to San Diego in first grade, and then to the Bay area in fifth grade, it’s brought me to be open about change and meeting new people. I’m open to any college or university that I can play tennis for that supports my degree interests whether the campus is big or small, public or private, rural or suburban. Regarding my educational interests, both of my parents are PhDs working in the pharmaceutical industry. I share their interest in science, and want to major in the sciences as well. I am working very hard to find a great team at a great school that I can play tennis for. Please contact me to discuss possibilities or a potential visit. Thanks in advance for your consideration.
