Hi Coach,
My name is Derek Rowan and I am a Junior at Ruben S. Ayala High School in Chino Hills, CA. My current G.P. A. is 3.78. I will graduate class of 2019 from Ayala High.
I feel I'm both a talented athlete ( cross country and track & field) and a smart student, as well.
My previous summer training and junior cross country season was very busy. I've attended a 4 day NIKE Running Camp at the University of California (Santa Cruz) and learned some new skills that really helped. I was selected to attend the 2016 38th Annual ASICS Clovis Cross Country Invitational at Woodward Park in Fresno, CA on October 8, 2016. I really enjoyed this past summers 2017 high altitude cross country training camp in Big Bear, CA with my coaches and team. During my 10th grade XC season, I ran a PR of 16:46.4 and medaled during the 3 mile Great Cow Run on September 3, 2016 at Cerritos Regional Park. In comparison, that same race my 9th grade year, I ran it with a time of 19:06. As you see, my times are continuing to improve.
Throughout school, my grades & test results have consistently been very good. I just took the 11th grade PSAT/NMSQT and received an overall score of 1290. I graduated from Wickman Elementary (Chino Hills, CA) and received an award in 2013 from the President of the United States "Education Awards Program" for Outstanding Academic Excellence. In 5th grade, I was tested and accepted into the G.A.T.E. (Gifted and Talented) Program with an O.L.S.A.T. of 99% and an I.A.P. of 19 on a scale of 1- 14.
In middle school, I attended Canyon Hills JR High (Chino Hills) where I competed in my school's Math Olympic Meets and I received a Silver and Gold Medal for Fall 2014/15 and Winter 2014/15 (respectively) for my teams performance. During my JR high years, I was accepted and participated in the nationally recognized A.V.I.D. program (Advancement via Individual Determination) during 7th & 8th grades. This is an outstanding early college readiness program that I learned a lot from and enjoyed.
My freshman year at Ayala High, I was part of the 4 yr Linked Learning (IBA) in Computer Technology for International Business. Unfortunately, this program ended my Freshman year. My Sophomore year, I was in Journalism and a staff reporter for my high school newspaper "the Bulldog Times". I've had many articles published. I concluded my time with Electronics Club and resigned my position as Secretary due to my very busy training schedule. I will soon be starting my Junior season with the Ayala Bulldog Track team. I'm very excited to set new PR's, improve my endurance and continue improving in track all while working hard to keep up my good grades.
Please take a good look at my academic resume, athletic stats, extra-curriculars and awards I've earned. I hope you'll see a well-rounded athlete and student! I plan on continuing to help my team, work hard, set PR's, keep up my grades and ultimately be a good asset! I look forward to talking to you in the future!!
Sincerely,
Derek Rowan
