As a learner, I am always drawn to the subjects that concern the living world and its complexities. Physics, Astronomy and Astrophysics are lenses which provide infinite scope for exploration. I am enthralled with the idea that the only thing we know for sure about our universe, is that we don’t know, what we don’t know. My goal is to pursue courses in college that will allow me to expand my knowledge and with time be able to take on some of that unknown and contribute to better understanding and ideas that can ultimately help our planet.
As an athlete, the world of track & field opened up to me in high school. I had always used my raw speed playing offensive positions in soccer but didn’t become a true student of sprinting until my high school coach Joe Fleming, memorably told us he was going to ‘teach us how to run’. It was a true ‘aha’ moment for me, as I realised once again, just how much I didn’t know, and what an opportunity that represented. I filled up my world with running, watching, listening, learning, and becoming truly immersed in the team. The impact on my times was immediate, but the biggest growth for me was in stepping up to share everything I learned with my teammates. I was rewarded for that leadership and determination this season when I was made Varsity Sprint Captain, such a great role in a team of people who all love track as much as I do. I know there is infinitely more to learn. I hope this attitude of continuous improvement, attention to detail and not leaving anything to chance, will make me a great candidate for a collegiate team.
